Interview with Ed Stasium who mixed the upcoming release. Video is 12 minutes but worth it to hear some preview snippets of his work on some of the new versions, sounds great.

Edited to add YouTube link.

Well look what the mailman just left on my porch. Kind of surprised, 1 day early, everything else I've pre-ordered from Rhino has shown up late.

Well, that didn't take long for Rhino to mark it "private", wish I'd downloaded it last night

I'm loving the new mix. It's like Ed Stasium wiped away a layer of gunk. The little sonic details I'm picking up, wow.

I've always liked "I'll Buy", the Stasium mix is just fantastic!

All 4 CD's are now up on YouTube for those who would like to hear it but aren't necessarily big enough fans to shell out for it the box set.

The more I listen to the new version, the more I love an album I already love. I think Stasium's mix allows the music to breathe. Bob's playing on Bastards of Young has an entirely new dimension, for instance. The tone and the little fills he plays... makes me smile.

Loving the new mix so much. Is Bob's schtick just playing random off key solos? The new one at the end of Little Mascara is uh, avant garde.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

From what I've recently read, Bob only showed up about 2 days after the tracks were recorded and added some guitar that Tommy Erdely mixed in here and there. The Ed Stasium remix added it back in where Bob probably intended for it to go when he laid down his bits.

This is interesting because I just read the same thing. Did he play on every song or only a handful? Bastards of Young, for instance. Is that Paul playing? Lay It Down Clown and Dose of Thunder sound so Bob-like. Another great thing about this mix is that it toughens up the low end, giving Tommy's bass playing power it never had in the original mix.

I wish I knew, there was a 23 minute mini-documentary on the making of the box set but Rhino pulled it from YouTube before I got to see it. Hopefully someone downloaded it and it will become available again.
