Just did a quickie review on Flex' thread.WestwayKid wrote: ↑01 Feb 2023, 5:55pmHolland is a solid LP in my opinion. Their last gasp as a working band before nostalgia kicked in.
Sail On, Sailor is a stone cold classic.
Steamboat is a very interesting offering from Dennis.
California Saga is fun. I do prefer the original version of Big Sur, but it's still a good song.
Trader has some corny Jack Rieley lyrics, but Carl's vocal is great, especially on the second part of the song.
Leaving this Town, ably sung by Blondie, doesn't sound at first glance like a Beach Boys song, but it's a solid song and when the harmonies kick in...
Only With You is a nice, understated song from Dennis.
Funky Pretty is great - it's weird, but not Love You weird and the ending is awesome!
It's then topped off with Brian's whimsical and weird and lovely Mt. Vernon and Fairway.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Yeah, I think it was someone on here who pointed out that you gotta hand it to Simmons as an arsehole who still privileges common sense money making over the increasingly headbanging right wing orthodoxy. Kinda respect it, honestly.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑07 Feb 2023, 8:15pmWater will always find its own level.

Making my way through Surf's Up and holy shit these lyrics about Kent State:

Yeah, it's really Mike's most risible song. Sucks because I actually like the slightly gritty sound. Should have just done a straight cover.

Digging through my old photos, I found this from drafting the review. Just noticed that the hi hat cymbal is in the middle of the kit. I have never seen this placement in my entire life. Hi hats are either hard left or hard right on a kit. Just a weird thing I have to note.matedog wrote: ↑09 Dec 2022, 5:20pm
Let's talk Stamos' kit for a second. It's an electronic set which isn't off base for the recording, but what the fuck is with those two China cymbals that you practically have to jump to hit?:
(also side drummer rant - why the hell does Stamos choke the cymbal after that intro fill? That always bothered me.)

Jesus Christ, that's weird looking. Like, I don't know anything about that stuff and it looks wholly impractical, yet doesn't gain anything aesthetically.matedog wrote: ↑06 Mar 2023, 1:01pmDigging through my old photos, I found this from drafting the review. Exactly. Neither functional nor aesthetic.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑06 Mar 2023, 1:24pmJesus Christ, that's weird looking.
