I've got three more reviews before I'm done with this exercise in misery. Interestingly, this is the only video of the remaining songs with any level of budget (except the Stamos one, but that had NBC ties I'm assuming). So there was a legit push for this weird ass choice for a cover.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑25 Oct 2022, 11:08amSorry, just realized you'd posted a new review. Jesus, what a slog. Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Who was the creative director of the group at this time? Who was pushing for tepid covers just so the band was quote-unquote active?matedog wrote: ↑25 Oct 2022, 11:12amI've got three more reviews before I'm done with this exercise in misery. I chalked it up to Mike Love and that he and Melcher were in charge with the creative decisions at this point, but that's mainly due to Brian's absence and the lack of Carl and Al songs on the album. Bruce is a fucking lackey so he was never in charge of shit.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑25 Oct 2022, 12:54pmWho was the creative director of the group at this time? I assumed this was the case, but it's shocking that Carl and Al would just acquiesce. They are complicit in a lot of shit in this era. I'd like to think they are better than this, but my takeaway is that they were not.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑25 Oct 2022, 1:36pmI assumed this was the case, but it's shocking that Carl and Al would just acquiesce. I surely don't know the entire Beach Boys catalog but I pretty much hate anything of theirs that I hear.
Re: The Thread to Ruminate About Mike Love's Rape Van
Like any and every beach boys song you hate?

Re: The Thread to Ruminate About Mike Love's Rape Van
I may ruminate on this (as I do Mike Love's Rape Van), but I suspect there's at least a tight little comp to be made of mostly their early stuff (and looking at mostly non-hits) that would pass them off as a bit of a proto-punk garage-surf band. Which you may not love, but you may not hate.

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead

Yeah, given that they were one of the founders of surf rock, there has to be even an ep's worth of early material that revbob would at least nod at. Yeah, I do enjoy surf rock. It probably comes down to the vocals now that I consider this with a clear head. So no doubt they have some cool instrumentals that Ive heard and if I can put on my Heston hat for a moment then those wouldn't count.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑04 Nov 2022, 6:15amYeah, given that they were one of the founders of surf rock, there has to be even an ep's worth of early material that revbob would at least nod at. An applied Heston hat, anyway, as the stuff you might like or tolerate would be pre-1964, before music existed or was good or something.revbob wrote: ↑04 Nov 2022, 6:22amYeah, I do enjoy surf rock. I seriously don’t know much about The Beach Boys beyond the hits except 1985-1992. It’s a sad existence.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑04 Nov 2022, 6:15amYeah, given that they were one of the founders of surf rock, there has to be even an ep's worth of early material that revbob would at least nod at.
