Also, I'm still really unclear why Capitol is supposedly feeling so "threatened" by his album that they refuse to release it. Does he sing directions to the record execs' homes for fans to firebomb or something?

A useful guide!
I liked the piece mostly for the kneejerk responses of "There are plenty of good solo Morrissey songs, like …" it would generate. Even I could make a solid album of solo Morrissey, tho I see no value to humanity in doing so.

I once ranked their collective output: Smiths, Morrisey solo, Marr solo:

The Queen is Dead
Louder than Bombs
Bona Drag
Strangeways, Here We Come
The Smiths
Vauxhall and I
You Are the Quarry
Viva Hate
Your Arsena
l
Meat Is Murder
Years of Refusal
Ringleader of the Tormentors

Call the Comet
Fever Dream Pts 1-4
The Messenger
Playland

World Peace Is None…
I Am Not a Dog on a Chain
Southpaw Grammar
Maladjusted
Kill Uncle
Low in High School

Boomslang
California Son

I can't do that kind of ranking—way to many apples, oranges, and racist limes to compare—but I'm good with the following Morrissey albums (not every song, of course): Viva Hate, Vauxhaul, Arsenal, Southpaw. I'm always surprised that Southpaw shows up so low in rankings as it's my favourite of his solo albums. If he'd retired at that point, a whole lot of stuff would be better.

I agree on Southpaw. It's a good album. If you like that one, give the reimagined version of Maladjusted a chance. Solo Morrissey is at his best when he rocks: big glam hooks, huge drum sounds.

I am way past the point of giving any new/old Morrissey a chance. Whatever personal enjoyment I get from any stuff that I already like—and it's hard at that now—given what he has revealed himself to be, I can't take in anything new. He's just too loathsome a figure to me.

I respect that opinion. While it's unlikely I will ever support him again with a ticket purchase, I've had a harder time turning away from his music as it's been a huge part of my life for a long time. It's definitely something I've wrestled with, however.

The Smiths are now on my mind... so top-5 tracks?

1) There Is A Light...
2) The Queen Is Dead
3) I Know It's Over
4) You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby
5) Half A Person

#1 is the only solid, unchanging pick. The others could be substituted with at least another half dozen.

Oscillate Wildly
London
Well I Wonder
Ask
Girlfriend in a Coma
