Yup, I offer no criticism or condemnation if someone's aesthetic affection for Morrissey is stronger than any political opposition. And I can appreciate what he's say about how we should separate Morrissey's (past) art from his political views, but it strikes me as a bit too abstract compartmentalization. If we make emotional and intellectual attachments to art (in this case, songs), can we easily make the division to keep the emotional connection when certain intellectual factors change? I think it asks a lot of an audience. If you can pull it off, more power to you. But I think it's rather tough in practice, especially when talking about an artist whose success has come from generating emotional connections.

“Beginning this September, Interpol will play U.S. shows with Morrissey. Frontman Paul Banks has now discussed the band’s decision to tour with Morrissey in a recent interview with Ed Power for Hot Press. “We thought it would be a good show for our band,” he said. “That’s how I’m looking at it. I don’t get too much into the other stuff.” Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for Interpol.”

Along the same lines, but not in the arts at all, Charles Lindbergh also turned his celebrity to shit by becoming a fascist.Flex wrote: ↑29 Jun 2019, 1:30amNot a musician, but the closest analogous situation I can think of is Ezra Pound.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑27 Jun 2019, 5:48pmHas there been another musician who alienated so many old fans for reasons other than musical direction or criminal conduct? Don't worry - not another interview....
Found this today - the first(?) single from Andy Rourke's new group. He's looking a little like Elton John these days. I'm glad he's healthy and still making music.

This does bum be out because his music has meant a lot to me. He’s just truly turned into a fucking idiot.

Amusing that he thinks himself relevant enough that a media outlet would make that kind of effort. If a sad and bitter chump wants to make an ass of himself, sure, they'll publish it, but he's in no one significant enough anymore that they'd pay someone to manufacture a, um, scoop?WestwayKid wrote: ↑08 Oct 2019, 5:52pmhttps://www.google.com/amp/s/www.stereo ... ws%3famp=1

I really don’t know who still pays to see him in concert? People still buying into the Morrissey legend? He was massively important to me during my teenage years...but I won’t stand behind this. I think some of these fans would follow him off of a cliff. He’s a great example of how to destroy what was at one point a nearly unimpeachable legacy.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑08 Oct 2019, 5:58pmAmusing that he thinks himself relevant enough that a media outlet would make that kind of effort. I just don't get what he thinks he can achieve with all the bullshit. Is he just being curmudgeonly for the sake of it or is there a point to anything. It is remarkable how many successful people who feel bitter that the world isn't exactly how they want it to be and the fault is all us puny nobodies.Marky Dread wrote: ↑09 Oct 2019, 6:04amI just don't get what he thinks he can achieve with all the bullshit. Re: The All Smiths/Morrissey Thread
Part of me thinks this is just a really poorly conceived play to remain relevant. Being provocative has long been his thing: "Wow, did you hear what Morrissey said about the Queen?" and so on. I wonder if he's so desperate to remain relevant that he's willing to play these really horrible cards? He might not care if people think he's a grumpy old racist as long as they're still thinking about him. The thing is, however, is that he's not the star he once was. He's not a darling of the musical world anymore - he's just an aging rock star and he's clearly lost his edge for being clever. He doesn't seem to understand that there is a thin line between being provocative and being a bore and he's very much crossed it.Marky Dread wrote: ↑09 Oct 2019, 6:04amI just don't get what he thinks he can achieve with all the bullshit. I agree with you mate. I believed for a while it was like a game to him where he was pushing his own boundaries. To see how far he could stretch his audience and their steadfast loyalty. He is very wealthy and I believe he feels he can do exactly what he likes without remorse.WestwayKid wrote: ↑09 Oct 2019, 10:13amPart of me thinks this is just a really poorly conceived play to remain relevant.
