I read his piece earlier today. I agree with him entirely about songs losing individual ownership once released to the public. It's intellectually respectful and is a necessary counter to what copyright has done to art.

And I can appreciate what he's say about how we should separate Morrissey's (past) art from his political views, but it strikes me as a bit too abstract compartmentalization. If we make emotional and intellectual attachments to art (in this case, songs), can we easily make the division to keep the emotional connection when certain intellectual factors change? I think it asks a lot of an audience. If you can pull it off, more power to you. But I think it's rather tough in practice, especially when talking about an artist whose success has come from generating emotional connections.
Down to the individual always.
Yup, I offer no criticism or condemnation if someone's aesthetic affection for Morrissey is stronger than any political opposition. None of us are in a pure position to criticize those choices.

I was surprised to find he likes The Smiths at all.

“Beginning this September, Interpol will play U.S. shows with Morrissey. Frontman Paul Banks has now discussed the band’s decision to tour with Morrissey in a recent interview with Ed Power for Hot Press. “We thought it would be a good show for our band,” he said. “That’s how I’m looking at it. I don’t get too much into the other stuff.” Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for Interpol.”

Weakly played, Interpol...weakly played.

Has there been another musician who alienated so many old fans for reasons other than musical direction or criminal conduct? There's got to be something comparable, but my brain is freezing.
Not a musician, but the closest analogous situation I can think of is Ezra Pound.

Along the same lines, but not in the arts at all, Charles Lindbergh also turned his celebrity to shit by becoming a fascist.

Don't worry - not another interview....

Found this today - the first(?) single from Andy Rourke's new group. He's looking a little like Elton John these days. I'm glad he's healthy and still making music.

Amusing that he thinks himself relevant enough that a media outlet would make that kind of effort. If a sad and bitter chump wants to make an ass of himself, sure, they'll publish it, but he's in no one significant enough anymore that they'd pay someone to manufacture a, um, scoop?

I really don’t know who still pays to see him in concert? People still buying into the Morrissey legend? He was massively important to me during my teenage years...but I won’t stand behind this. I think some of these fans would follow him off of a cliff. He’s a great example of how to destroy what was at one point a nearly unimpeachable legacy.

Yeah, that's where I am. If he keeled over today, I doubt I'd do more than shrug now. He's made the choice to endorse terrible, terrible people. His accomplishments remain, but he deserves to be shunned.

I just don't get what he thinks he can achieve with all the bullshit. Is he just being curmudgeonly for the sake of it or is there a point to anything. What exactly has he got to feel bitter about.

It is remarkable how many successful people who feel bitter that the world isn't exactly how they want it to be and the fault is all us puny nobodies.

I'll accept "punny nobody" but no one ever called me puny.

Either way Morrissey is a cold turd.

Part of me thinks this is just a really poorly conceived play to remain relevant. Being provocative has long been his thing: "Wow, did you hear what Morrissey said about the Queen?" and so on. I wonder if he's so desperate to remain relevant that he's willing to play these really horrible cards? He might not care if people think he's a grumpy old racist as long as they're still thinking about him. The thing is, however, is that he's not the star he once was. He's not a darling of the musical world anymore - he's just an aging rock star and he's clearly lost his edge for being clever. He doesn't seem to understand that there is a thin line between being provocative and being a bore and he's very much crossed it.

I agree with you mate. I believed for a while it was like a game to him where he was pushing his own boundaries. To see how far he could stretch his audience and their steadfast loyalty. He is very wealthy and I believe he feels he can do exactly what he likes without remorse.

He has become all I despise about human beings and wealth. I expect my dislike of him would please him. He is a very sad excuse of a man.
