Listening to some Johnny Marr solo albums right now. I'll never get tired of listening to him play guitar.

I didn't care for that 90s band he formed (The Heaters?), but the records he's put out the last few years have been fun reminders of what that guy can do. Makes it easier to forget about that other guy.WestwayKid wrote: ↑23 Mar 2021, 10:34amListening to some Johnny Marr solo albums right now. I'll never get tired of listening to him play guitar.

The Healers. I also didn't care that much for it, but yeah - his more recent LPs have been great. I saw him live in 2019 - maybe the last live show I saw before the pandemic. It was awesome. It's great that he's thriving as a solo performer.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Mar 2021, 10:38amI didn't care for that 90s band he formed (The Heaters?), but the records he's put out the last few years have been fun reminders of what that guy can do. The film, you could see some of this coming from the trailer.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑26 Mar 2021, 2:32pmThe film or the review?Kory wrote: ↑26 Mar 2021, 1:17pmPredictable.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑25 Mar 2021, 7:33pmReview of the movie: https://film.avclub.com/shoplifters-of- ... 1846539580

Re: The All Smiths/Morrissey Thread
In no small part, what made the Smiths appealing doesn't especially jibe with the times. Obsessive fandom and why-not-me? navel gazing seems especially shallow today, where awareness of the real tragedies of others is elevated. What made the Smiths work was the times they could play off, and I'm skeptical that our current period is conducive to making that seem anything but seriously self-indulgent.Kory wrote: ↑26 Mar 2021, 2:41pmThe film, you could see some of this coming from the trailer.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑26 Mar 2021, 2:32pmThe film or the review?Kory wrote: ↑26 Mar 2021, 1:17pmPredictable.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑25 Mar 2021, 7:33pmReview of the movie: https://film.avclub.com/shoplifters-of- ... 1846539580

Re: The All Smiths/Morrissey Thread
I saw this last night. I wish I'd have seen it in a proper movie theatre with a real sound system but since I live in an area that elected Marjorie Taylor-Greene, the chances of anywhere showing it are about as likely as Toby Keith doing a PETA ad.
It's hard for me to criticize anything that is basically wall-to-wall Smiths music or footage of Morrissey/Marr being interviewed (mostly from the South Bank Show in '87) but some of the dialogue is so shoe-horned in to make a Smiths reference it's almost laughable. You can predict the lyric from the situation a mile off.
I think the phrase is: "for fans only"
Nice cameo from Jose Maldonado though :)

As in?
"Hey, Jeremy."
"Why are you so sad, Polly?"
"My grandma died."
"She was old and she would have died anyway."

Really? Never had you down as a Southerner. In fact, in my head I hear you talking in a Manc accent.

That might very well be in the deleted scenes on the bluray.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑27 Mar 2021, 10:27amAs in?

Most disappointing part was Tom Lennon clearly only being available for one day of shooting so is only in one scene. He plays the obnoxious owner of the record store and the scene ends with his employee saying 'there were times when I could have murdered him'
Think of that x 90 minutes :)

Oh lord. I know that I'll eventually watch this, but this is valuable foreknowledge. If I go in with a certain hate-watch perspective, I might enjoy it more.oliver wrote: ↑27 Mar 2021, 8:13pmThat might very well be in the deleted scenes on the bluray.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑27 Mar 2021, 10:27amAs in?

The Smiths meant a lot to me when I was a kid. I probably couldn't write a movie that truly articulated what they meant to me, but I pray it would not be as ham fisted as this.
