It's a 1960s movie

Post by Dr. Medulla »

Doing a lecture today on troublemaking youth in the 60s and it got me thinking about the mind-numbing obvious choices that moviemakers use for the soundtrack to let you know, hey, this is the 60s, man! Some that immediately came to mind:

Jimi - All Along the Watchtower
CCR - Fortunate Son (I have had this playing in my head all morning—so bloody good)
Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth (I really hate this song more than it deserves)
Stones - Street Fighting Man
Jeff Airplane - White Rabbit
Dylan - Blowin' in the Wind and/or Like a Rolling Stone
Simon & Garfunkel - Sound of Silence

What else?
"I never doubted myself for a minute for I knew that my monkey-strong bowels were girded with strength, like the loins of a dragon ribboned with fat and the opulence of buffalo dung." - Richard Nixon, Checkers Speech, abandoned early draft

Scott McKenzie - San Francisco
Fifth Dimension - Age of Aquarius
Oliver - Good Morning Starshine
Sonny and Cher - I Got You Babe

Pretty much any song you see in those Time Life ads.

Such a wide spectrum to choose from Velvet Underground to the Four Tops and everything in between

VU is too outre for most 60s flicks, I'd say. As Inder put it, the songs from Time-Life ads—with aging Boomers grooving on their past, "when the music meant something."

Shouldn't the Beatles be represented? I'd say "Revolution" would fit that hackneyed template.

A few more:

Phil Ochs - I Ain't Marching Anymore
Zombies - She's Not There
Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made for Walkin'
Four Tops - It's The Same Old Song
The Doors - Light My Fire
The Band - The Weight

And for the beginning scene, before the kid gets drafted and sent to 'Nam, Beach Boys - Good Vibrations

What would the 70s, 80s or (shudder) 90s equivalent be?

Good calls. Those two are perennials for that sort of movie.

'70s: lots of disco
'80s: lots of stuff like Bryan Adams and (ahem) Depeche Mode. ;)
'90s: whatever Hoy's been listening to this week.

You'd think so, but I'd say no (if I'm on the same page as Doc). "My Generation" never got much airplay in the US, not even on FM radio, so it's less "iconic" in that sense, and most of that genre of film tends to be very America-centric

Yeah, I never read the question properly and was thinking documentaries as well as films.

Quite amazing it was never a hit in the US.
