Here's a question. How many good songs have you heard over a store's in house music system. I'm talking grocery and department stores not any store that is musically related in anyway.

I heard one of those awful recent Elton John songs last night and couldn't get out of the store fast enough.

the local hippie store will have some good music sometimes but employees are picking those. And the hardware store I go to usually has a local classic rock radio station playing and Ill catch CCR or something but I dont count that.

Usually its some Phil Collins, Billy JoeL kind of crap.

I think the best thing I ever heard was Maria by Blondie.
My grocery store's soundtrack is a generic round-up of pop hits from the 80s. Phil Collins, Billy Joel, the Police, Rod Stewart. The range is appalling to tolerable. If I'm shopping solo, I'll often have my headphones with me to block it out.
My local supermarket will play deep cut classic rock one day, hideous modern country the next, Katy Perry and Beyonce music the day after, 70s soul the day after that and then a weird mix of stuff like The Cure, 10000 Maniacs, Tears for Fears, The English Beat and Cocteau Twins. I think it's all on Sirius.

Hello,

I posted somewhere about hearing Boys Keep Swinging at a Sheetz (gas station/convenience store with fast food). I've heard other good music there while pumping gas (Lou Reed, the Cure, other Bowie, etc.).

Ive found acceptable music in these places to be few amd far between.

Our local Whole Foods often plays “Dad Cool” band’s like the Clash, Devo, Blondie, Elvis Costello, etc.
So is that controlled by the local staff or is that their corporate thing? No Whole Foods in these parts. We have H(W)ealthy Living which is sort of a regional equivalent I think.
I think it’s corporate and it depends on the day. Some days it’s a lot more Boomer-centric. I bet they decide by some sort of algorithm whether a shopper is more likely to be 50 or 70.

I ate in a restaurant in Sydney purely because of the playlist they had on! I stopped to look at the menu and they were playing old school Jamaican ska so I wanted to stay.
I went back the following week and there was a DJ playing, I don’t know what.

My usual grocery store (huge) plays I don't know what - sometimes a snippet of something I know will come on but the general din and disinterest blocks it out. But a couple years ago I heard "It's Only Rock n' Roll" come on and it was gray to technicolor. I locked in, felt a bit of swagger coming on, looked around to see if anyone else had noticed... sure enough, a gorgeous black woman with dreads was moving her hips as she checked out something in the ice cream freezer (yeah, I checked later). We also locked eyes briefly and she shook her head and body quickly and grinned (to me) devilishly. (unfortunately I saw a ring on her finger :disshame: ). Some music you just can't make muzak out of. It will come to the fore.

Wouldn't it be nice if you both could act on that moment without it being bigger than that?
