The music was never as good but that American Idiot album was as culturally vital as the Clash at their peak.

Fond memories as a 14 year old not being able to wait for its release and the joy of being able to listen to it. That's all me and my mates would go on about for weeks on end. Totally agree with you, whether or not we like the album, it was fucking massive.

I do not mean to sound callous here but John gave us the amazing Death Disco with the passing of his mother. Now that sadly Nora is unwell this might spark John into putting his soul into something great. He is quite brilliant at consuming stuff and venting in a direct and honest way about stuff that affects him.
As a general rule of thumb, misery makes for great art. There aren’t a lot of great “happy” albums. Take Springsteen’s catalog for example.
Yes, you’re right. There aren’t a lot of great Springsteen songs.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

The fast songs on there are good. The ballads are dreary shit and there are too many of them.

The last song Whatsername is brilliant, looking back the rest is pretty average really despite it being the only thing that mattered at 14.

Edit: Holiday is pretty solid.

I preferred Green Day circa 1992 when they were more trying to be the spiritual heir of the buzzcocks.

In terms of ethos, Operation Ivy. In terms of walking the walk, Fugazi.

I stand by their Lookout Records albums as a perfect expression of being a teen misfit in the early 90s. Kerplunk! is basically a time warp to when I was 17 when I listen to it.

Mid 90s Green Day for me. Dookie, Insomniac and Nimrod were quality albums.
