I love SLF, but this is the punk version of Miles Davis supporting, like, George Benson.Marky Dread wrote: ↑04 Nov 2024, 6:25pmSurprised to see PiL and Sham 69 on the same line up supporting SLF. Be fun watching John and Jimmy having a punch up.
He's lost some of that prestige that made PiL its own little island. Likely due to left leaning fans hating his heel turn toward the right.

I'm curious how true that is. By which I mean I haven't encountered any online discussion where long-time fans express disgust, etc., unlike with, say, Morrissey. I'd find it plausible, but if there's been blowback, it's been low-key.Silent Majority wrote: ↑05 Nov 2024, 3:35amI love SLF, but this is the punk version of Miles Davis supporting, like, George Benson.Marky Dread wrote: ↑04 Nov 2024, 6:25pmSurprised to see PiL and Sham 69 on the same line up supporting SLF. The last time I read anything about Pursey bumping into Lydon at an airport a few years back and holding out his hand to John didn't go down to well. Which is ironic as both parties had fallen out with Cook and Jones so they had that in common.

Re: Sex Pistols
I wonder if part of it can be explained that, whether he likes it or not, he's transitioned to an oldies act, despite still releasing new music. Morrissey is still considered an on-going figure. Plus, of course, Morrissey has always had a more intense relationship with his fans.Marky Dread wrote: ↑05 Nov 2024, 7:49amThe only comments I've read have been on Facebook where they have been a mixed bag of those appalled at him wearing the MAGA cap and others annoyed regards the Pistols/Pistol series court case.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑05 Nov 2024, 7:19amI'm curious how true that is. It's interesting that old lazy bugger has released 3 albums since 2012. Which is two more than SLF in the same period.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑05 Nov 2024, 8:50amI wonder if part of it can be explained that, whether he likes it or not, he's transitioned to an oldies act, despite still releasing new music. Re: Sex Pistols
Looks like they hadn't toured the states since 2018 and I'm sure they have less pull here than Europe, but I was surprised the size of the venues PIL played here. Specifically, they played (albeit two nights) at a smaller club that I just saw Hinds play a couple weeks ago. Also saw Titus Andronicus there a few years back.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Re: Sex Pistols
A quick look shows that in '88 that played some decent-sized venues opening for INXS and in '89 as the middle band between Sugarcubes and New Order (the headliner).matedog wrote: ↑05 Nov 2024, 11:55amLooks like they hadn't toured the states since 2018 and I'm sure they have less pull here than Europe, but I was surprised the size of the venues PIL played here. I was just thinking about Lydon and Morrissey the other day. I'm done with Morrissey, other than to continue to enjoy his music, but I don't have the same level of scorn for Lydon. I'm not 100% sure why, however. They've both played important parts in my life, but I have more leniency for Johnny regarding his world views.Marky Dread wrote: ↑05 Nov 2024, 10:03amIt's interesting that old lazy bugger has released 3 albums since 2012. Re: Sex Pistols
I'm the same way in as much as I can still listen to PiL and the Pistols. Probably because Lydon used to mean more to me than Morrissey ever did. I'll rip the guy here and to anyone else who'll listen, but when he does pass I'll be sad and grateful that he emerged and inspired.WestwayKid wrote: ↑05 Nov 2024, 12:39pmI was just thinking about Lydon and Morrissey the other day.
