If the takeaway is that Branson was a dick back then too Im on board.
I'm mainly amused at McLaren being dicked around. Always rich when a nest of vipers complain about snakes.

Which should go without saying. The best I can say is that his label released a lot of cool records.

Branson like him or loathe was one clever fucker. When no one wanted to touch the Pistols he played the game brilliantly.

Malcolm hated him because he was a middle class hippy.

Malcolm's claim in those letters are sour grapes. He was outdone by Branson and simply didn't like being manipulated.

Either way it was win/win The album went to number 1 on pre sales alone.

Really? Pity. The gist is that the Pistols were interviewed by MuchMusic in '96 on their reunion tour and the first question related to the theatre and atmosphere that the Pistols generated and how that was a key part of their success. Lydon immediately stalks off, while Cook argues that it's about the songs, not the image. Lydon continues sniping in the background about journalists, and Matlock makes a contrast with KISS that theatre without the songs means nothing. The interviewer even mentions that Lydon cites the theatre component in his first book. It isn't an all or nothing proposition—yes the songs but also yes the image and presence—but Lydon goes into prima donna mode.

Thought you were going to show us something new. I saw that when it aired in '96. So not exactly a news flash. More yesterday's papers. As with all these things you get part of the story. John being John is nothing new. But I've read by the time of that interview he had enough of all the usual mundane questions and went into Rotten mode. Lucky for him as the other 3 have no screen to hide behind.

Also you have to understand they are masters of playing the game.

The irony of Lydon acting the way he was in response to a question about Pistols and theatre was that it was all theatre. Predictable and lazy performance. So, sure, questions they've heard many times over, but the response was just as mundane. Don't like playing the media whore game? Then don't play it. But the prima donna with a chip on his shoulder act is lame.

...therefore he gave the journalist exactly what they wanted to see and hear then went off and had a beer. It must be a useful act to use at times when you have had enough. The Pistols in '96 about as relevant as any other pop group. All that happened 20 years previous now a distant memory for those that have moved on from those times.

Chris Carter did a quick tribute for Paul Cook's birthday, inbetween those two, he played Johnny Thunders' cover of the Shangri-La's "Great Big Kiss", which Cook played on.
