I bet if you sang them the ‘song from Shrek’ they would know it.revbob wrote: ↑12 Dec 2018, 11:19pmAs good as they are/were they didn't really make a big impact here in the US. People like all of us here are very much in the minority. I'm pretty sure I could ask every person I meet/work with etc tomorrow and nobody would know a thing about the Buzzcocks. I somehow got into a discussion about them with a woman in a bar in Texas and we were both amazed that the other was a Buzzcocks fan.WestwayKid wrote: ↑11 Dec 2018, 10:43amMe too. Sad - but not surprising - how is passing came and went in the US without much of a blip.

I think most people think of Smashmouth when you say “Song From Shrek.”

If a nightclub I'm in ever plays All Star, I leave immediately. The night's in the toilet from there.
Re: Pete Shelley
Hello,
During my undergrad days '80-'82 (don't bother doing the math - I'm old) in Albany, NY. I was a bit of a misfit. I followed all the new music I could as it was great music as well as a great outlet. There was a bar called 288 Lark where a tall, shaved head DJ named Shack played all sorts of "punk" and "new-wave" stuff. The crowd was pretty eclectic, a mix of arty people and street people, and appreciated it. He used to close around 2:00 am blasting "I Believe". It was a massive sing-along, every time. Everyone seemed to relate to some extent. It was a great spot and time - it fell apart when others started showing up to "look at the punks".

Re: Pete Shelley
Buzzcocks had a good crack at the mainstream in 1978 with eight appearances on Top Of The Pops - playing I Don't Mind, Love You More, Ever Fallen In Love, and Promises. If you add in What Do I Get?, that's 5 charting singles and 2 albums released in 1978 alone, all superb IMHO. Always loved I Don't Mind as a song, apparently Joe Strummer was partial to the flip side Autonomy.Heston wrote: ↑11 Dec 2018, 8:16pmYeah, I looked again after I posted that, had always assumed it got to number 22 or something. You are totally correct that it must have shifted a few copies to get to number 12 in 1978. And yeah, just a timeless classic.Marky Dread wrote: ↑11 Dec 2018, 8:00pmNumber 12 in 1978 is not bad at all considering how many singles you needed to sell back then. Ironically the Fine Young Cannibals version got to number 9. It's an all time classic song that gets better with each new play.Heston wrote: ↑11 Dec 2018, 4:17pmIt made the main news here in the UK, and deservedly so. Ever Fallen In Love might not have been a huge hit over here but it has entered the public consciousness to the point that even lots of young people and kids would recognise it.WestwayKid wrote: ↑11 Dec 2018, 10:43amMe too. Saw an interview from the 90s where Shelley says whilst Ever Fallen In Love made #12 in the UK charts it feels like it was a number #1 to a lot of people in the UK. Helped by the fact the Fine Young Cannibals had a big hit with it a few years later.

This is...technically correct. The best kind of correct.
(Walking on the Sun is the only Smashmouth song I don’t despise. I don’t particularly like it, but I don’t despise it)
