Bingo Hand Jobs and other musical relief

I've just bought the R.E.M. 'secret' gig at the Borderline in 1991 in what seems to be a legitimate guise. I've noticed loads of Springsteen releases from the late 70s/early 80s period, and Dylan recordings from over the decades, none on the parent label you would expect. The R.E.M. aka Bingo Hand Job album is excellent, a great reminder of them as they were peaking, but it brings to mind a question. Although they, by this time, were on Warners, the other two I've mentioned were almost exclusively on Columbia: how have these recordings been able to get a release when gigs by The Clash haven't surfaced in the same way?
