Words to strike fear into the heart of any man - Terry Chimes drum solo

Post by Heston »

Any thoughts from our resident drum experts? Sounds like someone falling down the stairs to me...

There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

That's like a parody of a kid getting their first drum set.

Awful in so many ways. And to call that mess of people Black Sabbath is just ridiculous. More like Tony Iommi and guys off the street doing Sabbath covers.

And on that video 45 sec in WTF?

That's fairly accurate.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Okay, so it is very basic. In the context of a rock concert, it was probably fine. I don't necessarily think it needs to be a 20 minute Bonham-esque solo, so the brevity is actually nice.

Actually, speaking of brevity and Bonham, I always enjoyed his little seven second solo at the end of Rock and Roll. Technically more interesting than Terry's but very to the point:

Yeah as rock drum solos go much better. That Sabbath one was just awful. I know in concerts for that type of music the drum solo is part of the show but damn that was awful and it isnt just an audio problem.

It sounds dull, plodding and pedestrian, but so do all of Fake Sabbath's drummers. It sounds like Helen Wiggin compared to Bill Ward, who was not so much a drummer as a force of nature. Not even Bonham came close.

Fun fact: Ward was the inspiration for Animal in the Muppets

Love it.

(And nice to see you again, Mr. Knowles!)
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead
