Music Ranting/Complaining Thread
It annoys me when "big box" concerts come to town and social media is flooded with images of people attending the show and then talking about how awesome the experience was. Last night it was Billy Joel playing at Miller Park. I just don't think a universe exists where it's worth dropping $300 to see the bloated corpse of Billy Joel wheeled onstage to sing She's Always a Woman. I just want to scream at these people: get some decent musical taste and spend less to see better performers in the process!? Neil Young came through town a month ago and played a pretty small theater - but Billy Joel can sell out a baseball stadium?

Re: Music Ranting/Complaining Thread
I’m gonna be a weird devil’s advocate one one aspect of this: I was dragged to a Billy Joel/Elton John concert at Wrigley Field by my wife a few years ago, and while it was Not For Me, Elton was going through the motions and hiding behind a light show but Billy fucking WORKED the crowd. I don’t care for his music, but he is a showman.
EDIT: the high point of the show was actually the fact that he let one of his road crew get up and sing an AC/DC cover because the guy is a huge fan and often does it during soundchecks. I think it was Highway To Hell, but I can’t remember

Hotel California is the most overrated song in existence.
Re: Music Ranting/Complaining Thread
Right up there with Stairway to Heaven and that redneck anthem Freebird.
On the Billy JoeL front apparently he's way popular amongst my son's classmates. Specifically Uptown Girl. Some undue parental influence going on there.

I can definitely respect that. It can be easy to coast - good to hear he's still trying to give the people a show.Wolter wrote: ↑27 Apr 2019, 5:06pmI’m gonna be a weird devil’s advocate one one aspect of this: I was dragged to a Billy Joel/Elton John concert at Wrigley Field by my wife a few years ago, and while it was Not For Me, Elton was going through the motions and hiding behind a light show but Billy fucking WORKED the crowd. Stairway BORES me to death. I don't get the love for that song.

You may not be listening to the proper version of the song. Try this one:
It will help if you're old enough to remember the show.

Is it wrong that I was annoyed that they sang the lyrics out of order?gkbill wrote: ↑27 Apr 2019, 10:53pmHello,WestwayKid wrote: ↑27 Apr 2019, 9:11pmStairway BORES me to death. I don't get the love for that song.

I’ve made a promise to myself to avoid arena/stadium shows. I’ll go to one but the dynamics are pretty lame.

Agree with all of this.
Quite a fan of Joel's music however. Though having said that, that is silly money to see him and don't personally get the massive stadium shows, smaller venue anytime.

I also do quite like some of his music. The Stranger is a pretty fantastic album. I think my original rant was really about how so many people don't take the time to get into music - and maybe my opinion comes from being someone who has spent decades diving deeply into music. These seem to be the people who think "big box" shows must be the best shows in the world because 1) they're in a stadium and 2) they cost a lot of money. I've found that not to be the case most of the time.

I can't remember the last arena show I've seen. Probably U2 at Soldier Field in 2010. I find it very hard to get into a show when it's in such a large venue. I saw Franz Ferdinand recently at a smaller rock club in town and they put on a fantastic show. I would not classify myself as a huge fan - but I went with friends and I was seriously impressed.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑28 Apr 2019, 1:37amI’ve made a promise to myself to avoid arena/stadium shows. I'll take a club setting any time. The closest I've been to a big show was about 6 years ago maybe when Bad Religion and a few other bands played an outdoor gig here. It was a good sized crowd but still much smaller than a stadium or arena show.

Hard same. Club setting over stadium or festival any time.
