Songs That Take You Right Back

Post by BitterTom »

What song can you put on that never fails to take you back to a particular moment in your life?

For me, I'll be boring and go Clash related. Putting Last Gang in Town on immediately reminds me of the summer in 2007. Just finished my GCSEs or O Levels as my dad would call them, lovely weather and I'm listening to GEER constantly. My mate and I are arguing what our band should be named and that's the only worry in the world we have. School was over, and we were going to be rock 'n roll stars. Happy days.

Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants To Rule the World" and New Order's "True Faith" always trigger memories of summers when I was in high school. Sigue Sigue Sputnik's "F1-11 Love Missile" sends me to the basement of a buddy who introduced me to them.

Fugazi’s “Bad Mouth” takes me to a very specific moment and feeling that is a bit too personal to share specifically.

"The First Picture of You" by the Lotus Eaters always transports me back to that glorious summer of 83. Young Heston discovered everything that summer. Love, alcohol, recreational drugs and real music. The long hair got cut off and I discovered punk. Yet this pleasant little tune is always the one that takes me back.

It's when he first met me, everyone.

Sex On The Beach - T-Spoon

While hardly a classic, this takes me back to a birthday disco when we were about 8. Everyone was laughing their arse off, "she said sex!" Party was good, birthday kid's mum gave us all presents which was generous. I got deodorant which made me feel 16 aka 'grown up'

It's probably my least favorite DM song now, but "People are People" takes me right back to middle school when I first discovered them. I had my mom take me to buy Some Great Reward (which had just come out) with my allowance money and I don't recommend listening to "Master and Servant" with your mom when you're 13.

Pretty much anything from the 70s, especially disco.

I saw the Lotus Eaters supporting Big Country in '83 the week that track was in the charts.

The song that always takes me back to '76 is "Anarchy in the U.K." still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I hear Rotten cackle.

This is a dumb as hell song, but Stick 'Em Up by Quarashi is a song that me and my dumb nerd friends were obsessed with in high school and it recalls a very specific period of my social life, and some specific moments driving around with my pals, listening to that music, being high school idiots.

Ma Baker- Boney M is similar with me and my brother. Would always do the opening "Don't anybody move your money or your life".
