It seems about time for this since the fourth wave is upon us and I know most of our limeys plus Wolt and Flex are on board for it.

Plus it’s a chance for me to post this balls-out shit:

Just gonna say this from the jump: the Selector were at least as good, maybe better than the Specials. Their second album, 'Celebrate the Bullet', might the best single album of the Two Tone wave. Plus Pauline was a great singer whilst Terry Hall was, uhm, a bit twee, shall we say...

Hello,

If we just want to consider musical execution, I would probably have to put the Selector first. If we consider the spirit of the music and movement, the Specials win going away. Pauline was a really good lead. I never saw them live but their performance on Dance Craze was top shelf.

If you put me on a desert island and let me select - choose - one album, I'd take the Specials S/T by a large margin.

Yeah it's great, an all time classic and fave. 'More Specials' was nearly as brilliant, albeit in slightly different ways. And guess what - Terry was the weak link in the band. The Selecters first two albums are flawless.

I know what you mean about Terry but disagree. The Selector didn’t have the same punk / ska axis that The Specials created and guess where they got it from 😉

Yep, right on, Bill. Never saw Selecter live either. I did see the Specials in '80 - vert rowdy gig - somehow Jerry lost his hat and went pushing & shoving through the audience looking for whoever swiped it. Eventually got it back and the show resumed. The man was Shane MacGowan drunk. I'd doubt the Selecter would have performed like that, but whatever.

In no universe are the Selecter better than the Specials. It's like saying Shakin' Stevens is better than Elvis.

But Elvis was largely pre-1964, so...
