London Calling was released in 1982 according to this list. Other than that, plenty of good tunes here, the odd piece of wank but generally listenable.

That "Sister Christian" is on the list is iron-clad proof that it's the product of a thousand drunk monkeys working at a thousand broken typewriters.

Weep for the future. I mean, yeah, we collectively fucked up by making it popular the first time around, but why are you repeating the mistake with all the evidence that it's shit?revbob wrote: ↑22 Oct 2019, 9:03pmMy son was telling me his entire 8th grade class (besides him) thought Billy Joels Uptown Girl was a good song.JennyB wrote: ↑22 Oct 2019, 3:19pmRight? At least they didn't think it was a great song. Small mercies I know. I PLAYED NO PART IN MAKING THIS SONG POPULAR. And I get double points for being a Jewish girl who was aware of Billy Joel's mediocrity all along!Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑22 Oct 2019, 9:38pmWeep for the future. There's something about not having been forced to listen to it the first time around, that probably reduces perception back it its core quality. Most of those VH1 80s songs I think are perfectly fine to great. If I had to review a 90s or 00s list, I'd probably feel differently having been more cognizant during those decades.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑22 Oct 2019, 9:38pmWeep for the future. Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Interesting perspective, whereby historical context is a hindrance. I do believe in the adage that familiarity breeds contempt, but it seems baffling to me that all kinds of crap from the 70s and 90s that was popular has been allowed to remain in the grave, yet 80s pablum has a horrible zombie-like quality to it.matedog wrote: ↑23 Oct 2019, 10:28amThere's something about not having been forced to listen to it the first time around, that probably reduces perception back it its core quality.
