If I had to choose one defining anthem for the '90s, it'd probably be this. A "classic" in every true sense of the word.
And a nod to Mick Jones as well.

Radiohead - The Bends
Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
Portishead - Dummy
Suede - Dog Man Star
Hole - Live Through This
Massive Attack - Protection
Johnny Cash - American Recordings

Yep.

The only gem missing is Copper Blue by Sugar, the greatest album of the 90s.

GMB was the first song that came to mind when I saw this thread title but wasn't sure it fitted the parameters of a "classic."

No, but I recommend you listen it very, very soon.

I take your point, mate, and it's a valid one, but all the these "classic" threads are italicized. So I stand by my endorsement. What a beautiful song. That rocks mightily. And Our Mick's (as Silent Majority put it so perfectly about MJ's singing a few years ago) "welcoming" vocals. (never mind his own nasty, pissed off counterpoints to Roddy Frame's guitar bursts).

I always passed by it because I see it so often in $0.99 bins, hope to check it out soon.

I know it was first released in 1988 but wasn't a hit until 1990 so I'm having this. I think this is probably my favourite song of the decade if pushed. Just had their brilliant album on for the umpteenth time. Yes, it's still greater than the Stone Roses' debut. :shifty:

The USA got the best mix of the song as well. I know Lee Mavers was an insufferable perfectionist but even he couldn't argue with this aural heaven...

Good god, no. If I were there, I'd look for a pit in which to hurl you.
