That's valid and I understand where you're coming from, tho I'll always take shitty Joe over Billy Joel at his best.

It stands to reason after x many years/albums they could have one good song. But then there's Phil Collins so I guess it is possible to produce only shit music.

I might budge a little on Detroit Rock City. I just get the feeling that KISS is serious about their dumb lyrics.
Who mentioned Detroit Rock City, this BLACK mogherfucking DIAMOND we're talking about.

Just how is Fingerpoppin' winning here? I voted for the mighty BJ song, shit chorus but the verses are on another level.
All of the songs listed are embarrassing and unlistenable, but thanks to eet week I do actually listen to Fingerpoppin
And, as I suggested earlier, the singer is someone we love. All (or almost all) the others are performed by sentient dung. Plus "Fingerpoppin'" is amusingly awful; the others are just awful (okay, BD isn't awful, but KISS are).
You see I take it the other way. The fact that the singer is someone we love adds to the hatred of the song not detracts.

Fingerpoppin' is a complete and total embarrassment. It's worse than any Billy Joel song. It's worse than almost every song ever. If only Joe hadn't recorded Boogie with Your Children it could literally sit top of shit song mountain. Still think Joe didn't try and sabotage The Clash. Joe slagging off all the other pop groups like Culture Club for example then goes and writes that steaming hot pile of turd.

But that was pretty much his character—bouncing from one bold pronouncement to the next, never worrying about the contradictions or suggestion of hypocrisy. Expecting that kind of consistency is a losing proposition. His earnestness is more appealing than the intellectual (in)consistency.

Inconsistent I can take but ill conceived not. Joe was thoughtful not thoughtless. Fingerpoppin' is a huge fail on so many levels.

I've got to say I don't mind Fingerpoppin' in that arrangement they used at the Dec 84 Brixton shows. The lack of backing vocals probably helped.

I temper my judgement with the knowledge that he was clinically depressed at the time.

Thats my position too. Not a free pass exactly, just some form of understanding at least. I cod myself into thinking Joe was abducted by extra terrestrials around this time and could not ignore alien orders to write some abysmal pop tunes.

What a cop out. This Is England is a fine song depressed or not. That's a feeble excuse for Fingerpoppin'.

I think Marky and I are holding Joe to a higher standard, fairly or not. I am a lot less pleased by a bad song by a good artists than an equally bad song by someone where my expectations were fairly low.

Speaking in all sincerity, you're a better person than to callously dismiss depression and its effects.

Oh, because Doc just mentioned it, I want to be clear: depression very much probably affected the awfulness of that era. I don’t blame Joe for that. I just mean the song itself is horrid.

Being someone who has dealt with depression for half my adult life I'm not dismissing anything and my comment wasn't callous. Many artists who suffer with depression have written brilliant stuff. Terry Hall springs instantly to mind. However and whatever you blame for Fingerpoppin' it is complete and utter rubbish.

I agree that arrangement is better but it doesn't save it from being a stinker. To think they included this awful track on Cut the Crap when they had Pouring Rain is nuts. Same with Play to Win which isn't even a song.
