Re: Wednesday Poll #9 Best Song Ever...
The US/UK dichotomy is staggering on their singles charts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oasis_discography
In the US, the last song to chart was Don't Look Back in Anger. There was some random song in 2008 that made it all the way to 93 on the charts. Oasis has 24 top 10 singles in the UK.
I wonder if there are any other bands that are similar or inverted (dozens of hits in the US and non in the UK). Maybe country singers.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Loads of uk bands never broke US charts - boomtown rats, jam etc. Other way round not so sure. Modest Mouse? Not sure how big they were over there to begin with.matedog wrote: ↑26 Mar 2020, 4:37pmThe US/UK dichotomy is staggering on their singles charts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oasis_discography

I don't think anyone in the UK likes the Grateful Dead. I'd bet 99.9% of the population couldn't name a song.matedog wrote: ↑26 Mar 2020, 4:37pmThe US/UK dichotomy is staggering on their singles charts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oasis_discography

Yeah. Maybe hall & oates a better answer. Stack of No.1s in US and only a couple of top 10s in UK. Remember seeing something about how many records they'd sold a few years back and being stunned speechless.Marky Dread wrote: ↑26 Mar 2020, 5:07pmTrue but Matedog is asking the reverse of your reply.Low Down Low wrote: ↑26 Mar 2020, 4:54pmLoads of uk bands never broke US charts - boomtown rats, jam etc. Other way round not so sure. I’d guess you are right with country singers. Garth Brookes and that geezer who is more famous for being a judge on one of those talent shows but is huge in the US.matedog wrote: ↑26 Mar 2020, 4:37pmThe US/UK dichotomy is staggering on their singles charts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oasis_discography

The weird thing is that country never really charted in the US charts, just the US country charts. I think I heard one Garth Brooks song growing up ("Thunder Rolls" or something) and listened to radio and MTV/VH1 constantly.101Walterton wrote: ↑26 Mar 2020, 8:03pmI’d guess you are right with country singers. Re: Wednesday Poll #9 Best Song Ever...
Fair point. He had a shit ton of fucking diamond certified albums which is ridiculous for someone that never had a hit on the US charts. But I don't really know how the charts work.101Walterton wrote: ↑26 Mar 2020, 11:45pmWhat about sales volume though?matedog wrote: ↑26 Mar 2020, 11:07pmThe weird thing is that country never really charted in the US charts, just the US country charts. A couple of curiosities (well, to me anyway).
The Manhattan Transfer, vocal group from NYC obviously, but broke the UK charts before they did the billboard one.
Alan Parsons Project, British band who had lots of success in the states but barely dented the UK charts at all.
