Wednesday Poll #9 Best Song Ever...

Post by BitterTom »

... on the work's playlist.

Apologies for the late thread, tried to sleep as much as possible during the day and just got in from work. But we're here.

All in all, a very good week for me here. Only the duff, dull Dianna Ross number and the "s'okay" Band On The Run are my quibbles.

My vote has to go to one of the top 3 songs since 2000, Mr Brightside, a fucking anthem and a half.

Only 2 options between Mr Brightside and a poor John Lennon song, went for Mr Brightside.

Not sure about your workings but I like the answer.

Completely split between Brightside and Paradise. Both are blast to play on drums. Going to vote for Paradise since I suspect it will got less love.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Horrible list. Never heard the Diana Ross one, "Whole Lotta Love" - like nearly ALL Zeppelin songs - is cool and destroyed by Plant's vocals. "Band On the Run" is a stone classic, Beatles-worthy. Actually love that tune, and not just for childhood nostalgia reasons.

Pretty awful list. Always liked that Diana Ross song and My Old Piano from the same period too.

It has been a downward slope.

Torn between Wings and Mamas and Papas but plumped for the latter. Both great songs. Aside from the Byrds the rest of the list is pretty average to bad, especially that whining fucking Oasis song.

Was it Wilson Phillips that ruined that California Dreaming song

Didnt see California Dreamin there. That should win it, utterly sublime.

A lot of possibilities here, more than most of the polls. Only a couple that I'd never consider picking, but none that easily stand out for me, either. I went with the Byrds, tho, but only because they hadn't had a vote yet.

I also went with the Byrds. I've always felt that this is an amazingly sublime song: McGuinn's jangling 12-string and some absolutely stunning harmonizing between McGuinn, Crosby and Gene Clark. The original has always been one of my fave of Dylan's mid-60's stream of consciousness lyrics and it just worked so well as a folk rock number. Also, Hal Blaine plays the drums on this track and Leon Russell plays electric piano. The Byrds + Dylan + The Wrecking Crew = a timeless song.

California Dreaming is also pretty timeless, but I went with the Byrds because John Phillips is/was a total creep.

Weird fact: Mr. Tambourine man producer Terry Melcher would years later borrow (and revise) a song co-written by John Phillips for the Beach Boys. That song? Kokomo...which cemented the West Coast axis of creepiness of Terry Melcher, John Phillips, and Mike Love...with Scott MaKenzie thrown in for good measure.
