Wednesday Poll PLAYOFF #1

Post by BitterTom »

From poll #8 we have a tie. Which should get through to the final? In my mind, it can only be ABBA beating an ok but still good Stones track.

Not that Dancing Queen isn't a legend, but I listen to the Stones track more often tbqh.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

ABBA all day long. The kind of song you would send into space to show aliens how great we are at stuff.

Great as "Dancing Queen" is (and ABBA in general were), it lacks the immediacy of "Let's Spend the Night Together", which really put first notice up to the "swinging '60s", "swinging London" (just a year before the "summer of love") that young people liked having sex. The Beatles hadn't been so blatant yet, I can't think of anybody (the Who, Kinks, Small Faces?) mainstream who was. You gotta remember - Oldham was pushing them as a 'pop' band by then, just like the other British bands were being promoted. American "pop" groups of the time were nowhere near as bold or "naughty". Ed Sullivan made Jagger change the words to "let's spend some time together". Feature that - for historical/cultural/social zeitgeist, if you will. Oh - and Ian Stewart's barrel-house piano and Charlie's machine gun snare rolls add a robust physicality to the horny urgency of the song, which the ethereal vocal breakdown serves to reinforce. Still sounds startling to me hearing it on the radio.

Love a lot of ABBA. Like the Stones ok, even though I find them wildly overrated. Love Dancing Queen.

The Stones song is better.
