Ok, it's not offensive but I thought Judas Priest did this kind of thing much better back in the late 70s/early 80s. And they did it with a knowing wink. I just think Shitallica take themselves far too seriously, and that makes them a bit unlovable in my eyes.

I would dispute the “demonic” thing. Metallica were a thrash band above all else. Thrash is probably the least D&D of the metal sub genres in general.

Yeah even early on nothing remotely demonic about Metallica. You could make the argument for Slayer.

Metallica had a few HP Lovecraft inspired songs, but that's about it.

Por ejemplo,
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

It's in the voice. He's basically trying to sing like the devil.

And even Slayer is absolutely performative.

A thing about thrash I’ll note is that of all the metal subgenres, it’s the one most likely to be political, and even left wing. It’s also the subgenre with the most non-white musicians/fans.

I wasn't aware of this.

As for demonic vocal stylings the same could be said of plenty of mainstream metal bands even the NWOBHM bands. Not that I agree with the sentiment but I see little difference.

A cool music scholar and political activists, Ryan Moore, has written a bit about how metal—when it was still called heavy metal—was originally big on metaphorical lyrics related to demons and angry gods and shit as a way of communicating real world anxiety. Punk was social realism, but metal approached things indirectly. In the 80s, the gap shrunk and some genres of metal started engaging more punk-like.
Back off, or I'll blow the roof off—with sound!

I don’t even think Hetfield is trying for demonic. I think he’s going for raspy/hard.

Oh yeah. Definitely. And Thrash was deeply influenced by the ethos of punk and hardcore. They kept the long hair and the insistence on technical playing, but added a lot more of the aggression and social realism while downplaying the spandex and hairspray. Much more Motörhead in the mix than their glammy cousins on the Sunset Strip.

And yet Hetfield is pretty conservative, isn't he?

Seemingly now he is. But he's also been a rich white man for a long time, so that can change people.
