Most UNDERRATED band of all time...

Maybe giving it some additional thought, how about Venom? I don't have as great a sense of how they're viewed in the metal community, but from someone who likes speed and thrash more from the punk side, that early Venom stuff is great, influential, and doesn't seem to garner a ton of attention.

How are we defining underrated here? Really influential to other musicians and genres, but never sold as many records as that influence would suggest? In other words, cult bands?

If so, well, I'll be lazy and go with my two favourite bands, Wire and Swans. Tons of respect from critics and musicians, but never transcended cult status. Cocteau Twins would also fall in that category.

There’s no way this thread doesn’t just turn into “bands we like that we don’t think other people like enough,” but I’ll second Venom. Massively influential and apparently underlooked by a lot of punks for being a metal band and by a lot of metalheads for having fairly sloppy playing and atrocious production by metal standards.

I always thought Jonathan Fire*Eater were underrated... quite a few NY bands from around 2000 cited them as an influence.
