I'll put a shout out for the Distractions.

https://www.thedistractions.co.uk/home.html

I saw them just before Christmas, supporting Vic Godard & the Subway Sect. Despite them being a Manchester band (so local to me) I only really knew their name and one single that came out on Factory Records (Time Goes By So Slow). Speaking to someone before the show who was a big fan it was clear they were definitely an interesting story. Signed by Island at the same time as U2, both had relatively little success with their first album, so Island decided they could only retain one. I'll let you guess who they chose.

The first album has just got the 2CD deluxe reissue treatment and it is excellent, I would highly recommend it.

That's definitely a good one (tho I'm not really a fan—just never grabbed me).

There’s no way this thread doesn’t just turn into “bands we like that we don’t think other people like enough,”
 Yep, very true. So here goes:
Screaming Blue Messiahs
The Waitresses
The Only Ones
Strong shoes is what we got and when they're hot they're hot!
- Marky Dread and his fabulous Screaming Blue Messiahs

I've never heard of them, even in passing, but I'm intrigued by and sympathetic to a band that got boned by U2. I'll hunt down a way of listening to that album. Thanks!

Worth the effort. A sort of Buzzcocks pop punk category.

I really need to delve into his solo stuff more. I like what I’ve heard a lot, but I haven’t heard much.

And I ADORE the Adverts.

Actually, I’ll put this out there: anyone have any suggestions or actual albums by TV Smith I can get access to?

This doc is a great motivator to check out his later stuff, and it's also an enlightening look into the life of a guy who absolutely refuses to give up. He's had SO much "failure" in his life, but he found something that works for him and he's chugging right along. He's right near the top of the list of people that I admire:
