Your song is 5 minutes, that's just my intro - the PROG ROCK thread

Post by WestwayKid »

I rewired my living room speakers last week and to test them out I grabbed a random record and came up with Close to the Edge by Yes. I put it on and my girlfriend commented that I picked the most white sounding music she's ever heard.

I did not like prog growing up. The young punk in me detested it, but I had friends who liked it. As I've grown older I'm less judgmental about music and I've allowed myself to like some prog rock.

Thoughts on the genre?

I really like what I like. I really dislike what I don’t.

I love a lot of King Crimson. Goblin’s soundtrack work rules. Van der Graaf Generator is excellent. Some Camel.

ELP, Yes, early Genesis? Do nothing for me.

I want to give it a go and it just so happens that Close To The Edge is on Deezer. From what I know of prog rock, I'll report back by midnight at the earliest.

Ditto.

Generally, the further one gets from 70s prog, the more likely I am to like it (e.g., post-rock).

Yeah. I limited what I used to fairly mainstream 70s prog, but there’s a lot of later stuff that comes out of prog stuff that’s pretty great. A lot of post-rock, math-rock, and certain more extreme kinds of metal have elements of prog. And of course, a lot of Krautrock is just German prog.

From The Beginning is the only prog rock song i knowingly like but it is pretty damn good to be fair and clocks in at a more than tidy four minutes and spare change.

Do like a bit of old Jethro Tull too but not sure that strictly counts as prog rock.

Dunno, does early Queen count as "prog rock?" Probably not. Other than that, I hear Jenny Haan's Lion are pretty good.

Are Tool and Mars Volta prog? I can get behind some of their stuff.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.
