Are Tool and Mars Volta prog? I can get behind some of their stuff.
Aren't Tool metal? Maybe proggy metal, haven't heard a song of their's since I saw this 70 yo dude singing Sober at a karaoke place a while back.

My rough definition of prog is any genre that aspires to go beyond its basic formula and beyond the idea of entertainment or popular appeal. It seeks to make a statement or observation via the music in ways that we expect of high modernist art. Prog regards its source genre with a certain level of distaste, for being too easy and lazy and rote.

There’s been a lot of blurring between those genres by several bands over the past 30 years. Opeth spent years straddling those genres as their career progressed (no pun intended) from a fairly standard death metal band with some prog elements, to more of a prog band with metal elements.

Our state has a long history of abusing non-white men. We more than qualify for nation status, mister. :naughty:

Well, I'll just get out of the way now and let millions of aggrieved Quebeckers tear into you and pour Pepsi on your bones.

They can’t even get independence from Canada, so how scared can I be?

You'll see, you poor arrogant fool. Slighted Quebeckers are the most angry ex-girlfriend you've ever had.

I did not like prog growing up. The young punk in me detested it, but I had friends who liked it. As I've grown older I'm less judgmental about music and I've allowed myself to like some prog rock.

Thoughts on the genre?
I get that, these days I'm partial to some Steven Wilson stuff, he gets labelled as 'new-prog' although his music is a melting pot of styles and ideas. He also has a sideline remixing albums and has done several by King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes, Roxy Music and XTC.

I rewired my living room speakers last week and to test them out I grabbed a random record and came up with Close to the Edge by Yes. I put it on and my girlfriend commented that I picked the most white sounding music she's ever heard.

I think I might be the only actual fan of the genre here, I dig VDGG the most, but also Crimson, Gentle Giant, Camel, Yes from Fragile through Relayer, all Genesis before Gabriel left are great, and the two mostly instrumental albums afterward are ok. I'm lukewarm on ELP, but Tarkus is pretty great, along with Pictures at an Exhibition. I'm not super hot on the Canterbury scene but I have a few albums. My love of prog extends to the more technical jazz fusion of Mahavishnu, Return to Forever, etc. Phil Collins was also involved with a group called Brand X that was quite good. Given my vocal limitations, my own music probably falls most easily into the prog category; it was the only way I could think to make instrumental music interesting enough for me to write and record.
