Re: A Bunch of Fives (New Challenge Thread)
Almost caught up.
Dobie Gray - Out On the Floor
The "hey hey hey" hook is great. The sound and arrangement are awesome too. The rest of the vocal melodies are good, not great. It was cool to hear Dobie Grey beyond "Drift Away" and I like it a lot, but don't quite love it. 7.5/10
Gruff Rhys - Own Your Loneliness
"Dreamy" is a good descriptor. The synthsizer and bass lines are pretty cool. His voice doesn't do much for me except that high note he hits. The vocal line follows the piano a bit too closely if I'm going to be picky. This is pretty good. 6.5/10
Los Shakers - Break It All
Never heard of these guys, but they sound great. I think others have said a bit derivative, but it sounds great, energy is high. What's not to like? 7.5/10.
Ron Sexsmith - Radio
I def get the Kinks vibe on this. Good, but nothing sticks out too much for me. 6/10.
Giuda - Fat Boy Boogle
Yeah, the vocals are pure Paul Stanley. Very glam with a bit of ACDC (maybe it's just the "Bad Boy Boogie" name similarity). It's fun but doesn't do a ton for me. 6/10.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.
Re: A Bunch of Fives (New Challenge Thread)
Coming On Strong - Brenda Lee. Impeccable performance and arrangement. I wish it was longer. 8.5/10
Punk Special - Underground Heroes. The harmonica is a terrific touch. My overused descriptor on these things is "great energy," but this definitely has that. Great guitar lead lines too. Vocals are nicely unhinged too. Lots of fun 8/10.
Baghdad - Flo Perlin - Lovely stuff. I like this a lot. Great instrumentation, harmonies, just spot on. I'll have to check out more of her stuff too.
Here's The Thing - Sports Team. Vocals are a bit kooky/offkilter, but the energy sells it. They even fit a nice little breakdown in the middle. I'm going to explore more from these guys. 7.5
Hate It When You Leave - Keith Richards. This a lovely arrangement and great playing all around. I just can't stand Keith's voice. It's a 6.5 for me. It's almost great, but I can't get beyond his weak vocals. His upper register sounds pretty good, but it's only in the very last second or two of the fade out.

Punk Special - Underground Heroes.
Maj, any idea what's going on with these guys? Looks like they did one album in 2012 and that's it.

Re: A Bunch of Fives (New Challenge Thread)
Very cool theme.
Slime - Stortebeker
I'm getting a bit of a Johnny Thunders vibe on this with the rockabilly licks. Catchy and lots of fun, I dig the big gang vocals. Cool story too. 7.5/10
Paranoid Visions - An Bhfuil Tu Sasta
Nothing sticks out too much, but solid performances all around. 7/10.
Anhrefn - Crafwr
The intro guitar work really caught my ear. If I had to be overly critical, I was hoping for a bigger chorus, but this is still a lot of fun and that energy. 7/10.
Oi Polloi - Ar Ceòl's Ar Cànan
Another solid rocker. The breakdown was great. Vocals are def less melodic, but that's alright, it fits the music well.
Les Partisan - Radio Rebelle
Real cool ska-ish rockabilly. Just another good, fun song. 7/10
Some obscure stuff here that I couldn't find on Spotify. Good pics all around.
