From the Stiff tour, which side are you on?

I think - understandably given the raucous, end of night pissed up singalong that he experienced it through - that Costello missed the libertarian subtlety of the Dury song and wrote a response to a song that doesn't quite exist.

I honestly don't think I knew that particular origin of Pump It Up. I probably prefer the Costello tune on the merits, but I dunno if it really stands up as a rejoinder to the Dury tune.

1 vote for Elvis. I remember getting This Year's Model when it came out & I was in high school. Love that album.

I never thought it was a direct rejoinder so much as a response to the tour experiences itself.

Like, I would consider it more like two different songs responding to Kent State than a “Southern Man/Sweet Home Alabama” situation.

I prefer having sex, drugs and rock n roll to pumping it up.

Both great songs in their own right.
