So I adore the B52's first album. But the 2nd and third are patchy and would've made one great solid album. So I've gone with R.E.M. the I.R S. years were solid.

(Pylon, for the record, were dang good but much less influential than either REM or B=52's.)

Yeah. That’s how I had to do it. If you’re going three albums without filler...it’s gotta be REM.Marky Dread wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 5:28pmSo I adore the B52's first album. But the 2nd and third are patchy and would've made one great solid album. So I've gone with R.E.M. the I.R S. years were solid.

Maybe but "I liked them when" or "before..." or "their old stuff before..." those are all pretty hipster.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 6:41pmGoing for the lesser known band is always the greater hipster move.revbob wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 6:35pmEarly years REM fan = hipster by default no?Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 5:45pmWe got a hipster badass here!Kory wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 5:09pmThis board is the real lamestain if it prefers either of these two bands to the true Athens heroes.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 3:04pm

Your next poll should be "You can only listen to one band. Choose either a good band or an influential band." Okay, maybe include a third option - a good and influential band.

Re: B-52's vs. R.E.M.
Right, but that's only when comparing different periods of a band. When comparing two bands, more obscure is more hipster. Or as we say, more Korpster.revbob wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 8:13pmMaybe but "I liked them when" or "before..." or "their old stuff before..." those are all pretty hipster.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 6:41pmGoing for the lesser known band is always the greater hipster move.revbob wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 6:35pmEarly years REM fan = hipster by default no?Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 5:45pmWe got a hipster badass here!

This poll has rekindled my passion for the b-52s
Given some of the responses here, dare I call them underrated?

Re: B-52's vs. R.E.M.
Hey WWK, sorry I missed this earlier. Thanks for the assessment of their later stuff. I’ll give some of it a listen on youtube.WestwayKid wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 10:26amTheir final 6 albums are tricky. New Adventures in Hi-Fi is really good. Up, Reveal, and Around the Sun were not very good. Accelerate and Collapse into Now were a welcome return (and worth checking out), but could never recapture what they once were or completely erase the bad taste of the previous trio of duds.Kimmelweck wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 10:22amI’ve always liked R.E.M though, everything up to and including Green anyway. Saw them on the Green tour in 1989. I bought the next 3 albums after that (Out of Time, Automatic for the People, and Monster) but I didn’t like those albums nearly as much as the IRS stuff (or Green), and then I kind of tuned them out. I know nothing of their final 6 albums. Of the first 3 albums, I’m probably in the Fables camp too, but these days I'm more likely to just listen to Eponymous before listening to one of the first 3 albums start to finish.
