Another one of my favorites. The follow up Black Love is arguably better than Gentleman. More urgent and punky. Less self loathing also. It’s also got some pretty epic string arraignments in sections. Highly recommended.

I listened to that album he did with mark lanegan in (gutter twins) and the two reunion disks. Both were really strong but no I haven’t heard his latest. I’ll have to give it a spin. I’m shooting myself for not seeing them on their last tour. They’ll probably never play againWestwayKid wrote: ↑15 Jun 2021, 9:26amYes, I am a fan. They do often get lumped in with the grunge set and I agree they were/are much better than that. Gentlemen was the first one I got into and I was hooked. Dulli is definitely an interesting guy and I agree that there is some character acting going on, as well as quite a bit of black humor. Have you listened to his latest solo release? I liked it.RockNRollWhore wrote: ↑15 Jun 2021, 2:06amAnybody else a fan? I feel like these guys kind of get relegated to grunge also ran status but they were so much better than that. Lots of obvious soul influences and an epic conceptual arc behind their records. Dulli has gotten alot shit over the years for his lyrics as well. While I do agree they come across as incredibly mysoginistic it's pretty clear he was just character acting. Meaning I don't think any of it is meant to be taken literally. They're one of those bands like THB era manics that suck you into the abyss. I can only spin them every once in awhile. It's pretty dark stuff.
This one is one of my favorites:

I seem to recall that the only track I rated at all on that album was the Urge doing Radio Clash.

Just looking at the track listing now and there is nothing there that sells the contents. Pity the completists.

JORTSVILLE REPRESENT.
Nothing as wretched as the Indigo Girls' version of Clampdown.
I do love (and so did Wally - we bonded over this) the Thea Gilmour version of I'm Not Down, but I don't recall if it was on this tribute or another.

Huh, I didn't realize they were from your area. I got into them for a little while when I was in college, but now I'm feeling inspired to listen to them again for old times' sake.JennyB wrote: ↑15 Jun 2021, 3:53pmJORTSVILLE REPRESENT.

Their cover of Band of Gold is great.

Hell yes it is. That entire ep of soul covers they did is fantastic.

Re: Afghan Whigs
They’re a rare type of band whose reunion records were on par with their original run. In Spades is right behind Gentleman as their best record IMO. It’s a gorgeous album, give it a spin.

Re: Afghan Whigs
1965 is their only bad record IMO. And it’s not that the songwriting is bad but the lyrics are fucking beyond awful in spots. Dulli went from tormented sexuality to full on cornball butt rock territory.
This song may be the worst offender:
I swear to god it sounds like the Backstreet Boys.
