I think both a great, but I'm more of a Pixies fan, so goes my vote.

I have no preference other than for the one that is playing.

This is ultimately the best answer. God. I think MAYBE I like the JAMC version slightly better, but that Pixies version just gets intense by the end, huh.

Is this what Jesus and Mary Chain sound like? I didn't think they'd rock.

Depends on the record. That album, Automatic, is one of their more straight-forward or conventional ones.

I thought they sounded like drab early Cure. Like My Bloody Valentine.

First album sounds like if Brian Wilson and Lou Reed got together in 1965 to do a record—surf with a lotta feedback. That's the closest you'll get to MBV, I'd say. From there it's various degrees of noise rock to more conventional alt rock, but with a dark (sometimes corny dark) emphasis. Check out the 21 Singles compilation as a superb overview.
