The story told in that video above where there was a mastering error resulting in a muddy version being released is mind-boggling. Was it a financial decision to not re-press the records? Seems like they could have created more buzz by trying to withdraw the bad copies, making them collectible.
I heard/read that the original cassette sounds fine (not muddy).
The original cassette does not sound so great. Maybe better than the LP pressing, but it’s been overrated. This new issue sounds much better, with better stereo imaging and very powerful, though sometimes Johnny’s triple-tracked lead vocals are still a bit muddy. Jerry kicks serious ass.

I finally received the CD recently. The sound is fantastic. I compared it a bit with the Track LP Restored version from 2012. The most notable difference is that the ending of “It’s Not Enough” is longer/doesn’t fade out. The end is similar to that of the Lost ’77 Mixes version. The Masters version doesn’t seem too loud to me, so I’m thinking that it’s not brickwalled. In the same order, I also got the reissue of The Waldos’ Rent Party CD, and it’s worth getting as well.

The Masters version is on Spotify:

It's not completely brickwalled but it has been mixed heavily to increase certain tracks. Not too many peaks and troughs in the spectral sound files. Some culprits worse than others. It's definitely been forced to give it more oomph. But not surprising either as these masters were never mixed for cd in the first place. So if this had been released at the time it would never had sounded like what we are listening to on this cd.

I've done my own mix.
