Ranking the Discographies
Re: Ranking the Discographies
Man, I didn't think Metallica gatekeeping was still a thing.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I love and support this Metallica gatekeeping.

It makes me feel nostalgic for a simpler time in my life. I wish I still had my Ride the Lightning t-shirt ...

Re: Ranking the Discographies
Did we ever do the Stones? I'll have a go, but starting with Satanic Majesties - as trying to figure in the UK versus US nonsense muddies the waters too much for me.
1) Sticky Fingers
2) Exile on Main St.
3) Let It Bleed
4) Beggars Banquet
5) Some Girls
6) Goat's Head Soup
7) Their Satanic Majesties Request
8) Tattoo You
9) Blue & Lonesome
10) It's Only Rock 'n' Roll
11) A Bigger Bang
12) Black and Blue
13) Voodoo Lounge
14) Emotional Rescue
15) Steel Wheels
16) Undercover
17) Bridges to Babylon
18) Dirty Work
I think Sticky and Exile are so, so close. Same with Let It Bleed and Beggar's for 3 & 4.
If I was going back a little further - I'd say Aftermath slots in just ahead of Some Girls, Between the Buttons just in front of Goat Head's Soup.

Re: Ranking the Discographies
I thought about doing one for The Fall but looked at the list and just shuddered. A decent chunk of "fuck yeah," a whole lot of "this generally works," and only a few "meh." But the idea of actually ranking them seems likes a miserable struggle.

Re: Ranking the Discographies
A slightly different sort of discography, here's the X-Claim catalog ranked:
F.U.’s – Kill For Christ: The best record the early 80s Boston scene put out, possibly. Snotty, funny, high octane and with killer pushead cover art. These guys would get a bad wrap for their next record, but really the gravest sin they committed was having a sense of humor. Pure hardcore accelerant.
DYS – Brotherhood: Dave Smalley's first outfit, there's a level of musicianship here that puts it a cut above. Tracks like the title song and wolfpack are still legendary hardcore tunes.
SS Decontrol (SSD) – Get It Away: SSD's sophomore release slows things down ever so slightly and beefs up their sound just a touch. The result is their finest outting. Pure straight edge aggression.
SS Decontrol (SSD) – The Kids Will Have Their Say: a legendary release, it feels weird to rank this one below the others. If we were just doing album covers, this would be at the top of the list - and any list. The album ends with the excellent How Much Art which actually got some local radio play back in the day. The rest of the record is good, but sounds like Barile and Springa are still figuring out how not to just sound like Minor Threat. This and Get It Away are supposed to finally get reissued on Trust Records next year, which will be great.
Jerry’s Kids – Is This My World?: A decent effort but Jerry's Kids always seem to get lost in the shuffle. I like their This is Boston and second LP stuff more, to be honest.
F.U.’s – My America: I get that it's a joke, and the band has already suffered a bit of an undeserved reputation, but the jingoism which makes up the core of this record wasn't great then and has aged like milk. Funny gimmick to cover Grand Funk tho.
That's it. The ranking you've all been waiting for.

Re: Ranking the Discographies
Manics:
The Holy Bible
Everything Must Go
Journal for Plague Lovers
This Is My Truth...
Futurology
Generation Terrorists
Rewind the Film
Postcards from a Young Man
Send Away the Tigers
The Ultra Vivid Lament
Gold Against the Soul
Lifeblood
Resistance is Futile
Know Your Enemy
They don't have (in my opinion) a bad release in the lot.

Re: Ranking the Discographies
Blue and Lonesome is pretty striking how good it is for how late it is in their career. A covers album, sure, but way more inspired than I had expected. I give Sticky a slight edge over Exile as well. Probably same for Bleed and Beggars. I might rank Black and Blue a little higher since I really dig the deep cuts on that one.WestwayKid wrote: ↑31 Jul 2022, 2:59pmDid we ever do the Stones?
