Hey Kory (and Marky), what do you think the best masterings of the Joy Division catalog are? I have the 2-disc editions that were released in, what, 2007? Is it worth digging around for some earlier (or later) CD issues?

Joy Division The Complete BBC Recordings
Closer
Unknown Pleasures
It’s good but I don’t count compilations.
You're correct of course. But I was just having fun as it's such a small catalogue.

I have those ones too. It's been forever since I heard the earlier issues, which a lot of people say are better because the 2-discers pumped up the bass. And of course I believe they're bricked. It's my understanding based on word of mouth that the Heart and Soul box is the best master. I have it, but I haven't A/B'd with any of the others so I can't speak from any experience. The 2-discers do me well because I like bass, and this is a band where more bass is pretty welcome.

Was the Heart and Soul set a remaster job of the first cd's? That's the one I tend to play, but more out of convenience than an awareness that it's better sounding.

That's my understanding. I know it's a new master after those originals, but I'm not sure what the source was. Given that people think it's the best ones, I'd imagine it's from the tapes.

I only have the Heart & Soul box and it sounds very good to my ears.

Speaking of JD, this is another favourite. I only learned a few months ago that Sumner and Hook trade instruments on this one, yet do remarkable impressions of each other.

You owe me. And. I. Will. Collect. This, I swear.

(This works better if you can imagine a Kirby drawing where the hero/villain raises their fist to the sky, with perspective making it seem overly large. Also, imagine me as a Kirby hero/villain.)

Hmmm, this is actually how I imagine all our interactions, so this tracks.
