The Envy-the-Deaf Poll

Post by Dr. Medulla »

In some polls, there are no winners, except for those who refuse to vote. You've been convicted of crimes against humanity and are sentenced to listen to one band for the rest of your days. Which option has you thinking, "It could have been worse"?

Is suicide an option? Not the band but the option of choosing your own demise.

It's gotta be DMB. Not everything Tom raves about is always bad.

I'm probably equally cool with all of those bands (assuming #3 is Metallica?). I shall abstain since Doc didn't take the Heston poll approach of just adding all the (sometimes conflicting) options.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

No, not Metallica. Were they called Embrace?

Yeah. Tom's band has to objectively be the worst of the three.

Jesus, we really are Statler and Waldorf. An early draft of the poll had “Suicide (band or action, your choice)” as the third option. But Suicide (the band) are cool, which defeats the point of the poll.

Counterpoint: Suicide never featured a killer Boyd Tinsley solo.

That’s not how counterpoints work.

I don't remember that band being his thing. I see he posted it on a Packet of Threes, did I miss something?

I recall him lauding them a few times. They've stuck in my mind in terms of "what the hell is he going on about here?"

Edit: Even if you don't like DMB, it's still the strategically correct choice because you get way more diversity out of it given all the live albums and how the songs can change in live settings. If it's all you have to listen to forever, it might as well not be something stagnant.
