Id be lying if I said I wasn't completely bored by the Rolling Stones at this point.

One of those bands where fans hear something considerably more significant and affecting than me. A good 60s band (tho Jagger's voice has never seemed an asset to me) but I've never gotten the, like, inner circle greatness thing.

Also, I want tep to have to announce his choice publicly.

Re: A Satisfying Poll
The problem with the stones version is that, beyond having heard it a zillion times, there's nothing that really stands out as being a historic triumph or anything. I mean, I get it was a big hit but the stones would have catchier songs, more interesting material, and whole albums filled with more personality.
The Devo version, by contrast, still feels like an edgy deconstruction all these years later. It's in dialog with music past, present and future. And sounds cool as shit.
Addendum: least I sound too harsh on the stones version, I still like it a lot. It was a great rock single. Devo just takes it to the stratosphere.

Not a huge fan of it tbh, but Jerry Lee Lewis and Rory Gallagher do a version of it i think really rocks.

I've watched that Devo SNL performance dozens of times and it's still amazingly compelling. The conception and execution is as great as any other rock-on-tv moment. Just a complete takedown of rock tropes.Flex wrote: ↑21 Sep 2022, 8:42amThe problem with the stones version is that, beyond having heard it a zillion times, there's nothing that really stands out as being a historic triumph or anything. Oh yeah, that version is great too (for reasons almost diametrically opposite of the Devo version).Low Down Low wrote: ↑21 Sep 2022, 8:46amNot a huge fan of it tbh, but Jerry Lee Lewis and Rory Gallagher do a version of it i think really rocks.

I stand with Tep on this one. As much as I like the Devo version (and it is fantastic), the original will always be the best version to me.

Otis Redding's version from Monterey is also pretty damned great.

The thing is, tep is also a huge Devo fan. This should be seriously tough for him.WestwayKid wrote: ↑21 Sep 2022, 9:12amI stand with Tep on this one. As much as I like the Devo version (and it is fantastic), the original will always be the best version to me.

Stones
Despite the over familiarity it is still a deadly riff and great lyric.

It also still sounds deadly live. I saw them last fall and was expecting Satisfaction to sound a bit tired, but they played it with an almost punk ferocity.

Re: A Satisfying Poll
Original is overplayed, overrated and mediocre Stones for me. Haven't heard the Devo version before but really enjoyed what they did with it so it gets my vote.
