And presumably been in Heston's preferred charting system of that time ? Amd what number on said chart would a song have to reach to get Heston's stamp of approval?Marky Dread wrote: ↑02 Nov 2022, 10:24am1983 onwards... Have to say a quick scroll through the 83 charts does reveal some good and even great tracks, but nothing like the depth of quality you had just a couple of years before. Thought I'd find dozens of tracks I'd forgotten or overlooked but not really that many at all tbh. Think most of best of that year being mentioned already.

I think it's important to know what tracks were in the so called Indie charts at the same time. As there are some carckers. But it's '83 and beyond so many more to choose from.Low Down Low wrote: ↑02 Nov 2022, 12:35pmHave to say a quick scroll through the 83 charts does reveal some good and even great tracks, but nothing like the depth of quality you had just a couple of years before. Re: January 1st 1983
Well I actually include 1983 in my golden period of 78-83 so I'm not sure what I was blathering on about last night. If anything 1983 is the greatest pure pop year of them all, though I prefer 78-82 for music in general..

Ahhh yes, the reaction to Hestonian positions so universal that even the author admits to it.

Fair point on the Indies. Just looking at the No.1s from 1983, the Maisonettes isn't one I'd have reckoned on, but i always did quite like that track.Marky Dread wrote: ↑02 Nov 2022, 12:49pmI think it's important to know what tracks were in the so called Indie charts at the same time. I love it when Heston has his David Byrne "My god, what have I done?" moments.

Holy shit that’s a 40 year period.Marky Dread wrote: ↑02 Nov 2022, 10:24am1983 onwards... Remember real music died at the end of 1982.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑02 Nov 2022, 9:46amSo are we supposed to pick just 1983 or is it a 39-year spread, all the way to the present?
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Good songs from 1983?
New Year's Day - U2
Radio Free Europe - R.E.M.
Let's Dance - David Bowie
Burning Down the House - Talking Heads
Overkill - Men at Work
Thinking about Burning Down the House, that whole album is top notch.
