"Can You Take Me High Enough" - The Power Ballad Thread
Who doesn't love a good power ballad ... ?
Maybe growing up in the 80's has skewed me slightly, but I have a certain fondness for some power ballads or at least an appreciation for how gloriously awful they can be.
I heard this gem the other day at Walgreen's (because retail stores are the best place to hear power ballads):
For those who don't know, Damn Yankees were a supergroup who were formed in the late 80's by a trio of musicians who saw their 80's popularity fading: Jack Blades, bassist from Night Ranger; Tommy Shaw, guitarist from Styx; and the Nuge.
This song, with lead vocals shared by Blades and Shaw, is surprisingly catchy. The video is pure late 80's - the band plays in front of some dusty gas station, while scenes of some Bonnie and Clyde type characters ("artfully" shot in black and white) are intercut with the band footage. Nugent plays some flashy lead guitar and wears some awful sunglasses (and appears to be chewing gum throughout).
Their debut went double platinum. Their follow up did not sell as well (it only went gold). Nugent left to re-pursue a solo career, leaving Blades and Shaw to record as a duo. They've since reunited off and on over the years.

Happy to confess I love as much 80s schlock as the next man, but power ballads are where I draw the line. No can do, I'm afraid!

Is 'Your Daddy Don't Know' a power ballad? I like that one, got into via the New Pornographers.

Out of curiosity, I read this list of the 50 "best" power ballads: https://myq105.com/listicle/best-power-ballads/
They included Prince's Purple Rain which is a good song (although they even acknowledge most people don't think of it as a power ballad). Every other I see on the list is awful. Sorry WWK, you may be on your own here.

Out of that list I like Why Can't This Be Love but don't see it as a power ballad.Flex wrote: ↑15 Dec 2022, 12:16pmOut of curiosity, I read this list of the 50 "best" power ballads: https://myq105.com/listicle/best-power-ballads/

I have a strict "no Van Hagar" policy when it comes to my Van Halen consumption (sorry, Mrs B)

Me too usually but this is the exception for me, especially like it for the lyric, "only time will tell if we stand the test of time."

I love me some monster ballads. Interestingly, Crue didn't have any good ones except maybe "Home Sweet Home" probably because Vince Neil has an atrocious voice. Poison is generally an awful band, but some of their ballads were decent. I think most underappreciated is Warrant. But I'm on talking about their big hit "Heaven," because that's probably my least favorite of their ballads. Even on their first album, I prefer "Sometimes She Cries":
They also had a tendency to do acoustic versions that greatly surpassed their poorly aged album versions. "I Saw Red" is the most notable, but I think "Blind Faith of their second album is my fav:
My fav though is probably the hybrid of their maligned (as it was post-Nirvana) third album "Sad Theresa":
I've refrained a bit, but please let me know if anyone wants a further deep dive into the Warrant back catalog.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

What's that old quote Doc or someone said to Chuck? "Someday you will be very wrong, and Hoy will be your greatest ally"

Man, I hope I said that because it's good and true. I suspect it was Wolter, tho.
