Replacements Poll

Post by WestwayKid »

Listening to the Replacements today. It's the perfect day in Milwaukee: cold, dreary, and gray. If you're from the Upper Midwest - you know what I'm talking about.

So, what's their best LP?

You can vote for up to 3 - so thinking once we're done we'll have some sort of ranking.

I included the original version of DTaS - and the original Matt Wallace version from Dead Man's Pop.

You should have said Dynasty, Unmasked, and Songs From the Elder. Too late!

Tough one for me, but I had to go with "Let It Be", but "Pleased To Meet Me" gets a lot of play here as well.

I expect Let It Be to get the most votes, but curious what else gets some. I really love the original mix of Don't Tell a Soul. It feels like a true progression from Pleased to Meet Me. It shows a continued growth from Paul's songwriting, but it's still rough enough around the edges.

I agree, the Matt Wallace version of "Don't Tell A Soul" (Dead Man's Pop) is the version that should have been released originally. DTS is just too polished to be a good representation of the Replacements sound.

I voted for Don't Tell A Soul. I love the way the songs sound on the Dead Man's Pop release.

Haven't heard that release, but wouldn't be hard to see it as a vast improvement --as I've written elsewhere, DTAS has great songs that are just strangled by production gloop.

All those hot and trendy touches of the era, like those damned gated drums, made the original a tough ride -- I always fantasized how that album would sound without that stuff. When I read the reviews of the above release, I thought, "OK, somebody finally answered my prayers."

The rougher 'n' readier ones have always been my go-tos, so I voted for Hootenanny, Tim and Pleased To Meet Me -- Hootenanny, because it was the first one of theirs I actually heard, and made a real impact on my brain; Tim, because it's Bob's last hurrah, and it's some of PW's best songwriting up to that point; PTMM, because it represents the best of both worlds, rough-edged playing with better production values, and a pointer where they could have gone. Well, before the gloop got into the mix, figuratively and literally, anyhow.

I had to go for the debut. But a tough choice, for sure. It's like picking your favourite Clash album!

Wasn't sure exactly where to post this, so figured I'd this might be as good a place as any.

Per Tommy Stinson, Warner Brothers will be releasing a "Tim" box set later this fall.

I know I for one Can't Hardly Wait!

I missed this poll, but somehow the outcome basically mirrors my personal Mats canon.
