I wouldn't actually make the case because I love his whole body of work too much, but i suspect a lot of folks would make the case for Johnny Cash and those American Recordings.

Of The Smiths real albums, this order is pretty solid for me.
Strangeways Here We Come (1987)
The Queen is Dead (1986)
Meat is Murder (1985)
The Smiths (1984)
Not sure this really counts as 'later stuff' since it's only 4 years between the first and last

Waits and RATT are the first to come to mind.
*edit* to clarify, I mean Detonator and Reach for the Sky RATT, not whatever they did in the 90s.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

This is true, tho the gap between the second to fourth albums is a lot closer to each other than to the debut. Just a massive step forward from album one to album two.

A lot probably comes down to timing. CtC was so bad I was probably desperate for something at least pretty good and it at leadt me those expectationsat the time. Mind you I haven't actually listened to it in a good many years.

I remember buying it, rushing home to play it, and wondering whether Mick was the sole real talent in the Clash.revbob wrote: ↑03 Jan 2023, 9:29pmA lot probably comes down to timing. Re: Bands Whose Later Stuff You Prefer
My top 2 bands of all time are Clash/Motorhead
Motorhead's later stuff for me was the best they did, everything (with a couple of exceptions) after Wurzel joined was fucking amazing...the old stuff is great as well however perhaps I just get sick of hearing Motorhead mentioned as the ace of spades band...
Top 3 Motorhead
1.Bastards- First 4 on the A side tear your fucking chest open!
2.Overkill (I know very early)
3. Aftershock (One of the most overlooked PUNK/metal albums ever, they should have stopped there as for me Bad Magic was not great...even though Bad Magic everyone loves just because it's the last one...people don't know...I know)
