I suspect youre right and it's pretty standard in the industry. In the recent Phil Lynott documentary, it was actually mentioned that they'd used crowd noise from a Bowie gig to augment Live & Dangerous, among many other additions probably. And in Pete Townshend's book, there are 3 or 4 full pages meticulously detailing the studio work that had been done on Live at Leeds. I assume it's simply the done thing.Heston wrote: ↑21 Mar 2023, 7:42amIt happens all the time. Judas Priest's live release was nicknamed Unleashed In the Studio. Live and Dangerous wasn't live, or very dangerous, come to think of it.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑21 Mar 2023, 6:20amGiven how much studio augmentation went on with both Alive records, maybe that shouldn't count.

I loved the original release of 'Play' by Magazine, but the 2cd rerelease with a couple of extra tracks on the original dic plus another gig is even better. I'm pretty sure it isn't augmented. The second disc has John McGeoch, so it's better in my opinion.
Other than that, 'Stop Making Sense,' 'Mott The Hoople Live,' any of The Jam releases and a few Bowie's thrown in does it for me.

Oh shit, Stop Making Sense is remarkable. I think that's my vote right there.dave202 wrote: ↑21 Mar 2023, 8:19amI loved the original release of 'Play' by Magazine, but the 2cd rerelease with a couple of extra tracks on the original dic plus another gig is even better. Jerry Lee Lewis Live at the Star Club is fantastic.
Also, the Brussels Affair, which is a live Rolling Stones recording from 1973 is really good. It was an unofficial release until the band officially put it out a few years back.

Re: Greatest (Favorite) Live Album
Everything mentioned except Kiss so far is exceptional. I've been trying to think of truly "contender for the throne" type punk live albums, this one comes to mind:
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead
Pex Lives!

I heard about that. Any excuse for people to be exposed to TH at their peak is good enough for me.gkbill wrote: ↑21 Mar 2023, 9:11amHello,Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑21 Mar 2023, 8:20amOh shit, Stop Making Sense is remarkable. The Replacements For Sale: Live At Maxwell's 1986
This one circulated as an unauthorized bootleg "Murder At The Maxwell" before being officially released as "For Sale: Live At Maxwell's 1986". For me this captures the band at their best, a few covers and finished most of their songs.

Well done chaps, absolutely fantastic.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board
Re: Greatest (Favorite) Live Album
Easy,
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Yep, given the Mats stage manner, that's quite an accomplishment. For what it's worth, here's the only one they didn't play all the way through on this album.Heston wrote: ↑21 Mar 2023, 12:46pm"And finished most of their songs"Sparky wrote: ↑21 Mar 2023, 11:41amThe Replacements For Sale: Live At Maxwell's 1986

A half finished replacements song is almost invariably better than whatever turd KISSINC. decided to polish on a given day.

Does KISS polish their turds? I think they just slap the logo and, most importantly, a price sticker to the turds.
