Weirdly, well before either of them had achieved success and/or notoriety, Madonna and Michael Gira dated for a time.
Wow this conversation just took a swan dive.

Just perusing Maddie's discography and while appreciating her cultural immensity, i can't say there's a lot of songs i'd care to listen to. Borderline i always really liked and after that there's nothing grabs me until Ray of Light which is probably her best. I don't know a lot of Cyndi Lauper stuff so can't really compare.

I thought Beautiful Stranger was a decent song. She didn't have any songs I actively disliked.

Don't recall that one off the top of my head, but yeah for sure, i can't think of many that were particularly bad or annoying. True Blue was kind of catchy i'm remembering.

It was the one from Austin Powers. Quite hippyish and mystical sounding.

Just gave it a blast and remember it now, definitely not bad, strong chorus.

The only song of hers that I genuinely dig. Not sure whether she ever approved of it.

It's a little crazy to remember what a big deal Madonna was in the mid-80's to maybe mid-90's: Like a Virgin at the MTV Video Awards, the Pepsi thing with Like a Prayer, the Sean Penn wedding, Dick Tracy and Warren Beatty, the Sex book, Vogue. I recall her having a concert special on HBO during her Blonde Ambition Tour. I think we've discussed this before, but do we really see that level of cultural exposure (or overexposure) anymore? In a time of more limited media outlets like the 80's - it was hard to escape.

In regards to her music, while I would not call myself a fan - she did have some great singles back in the day.

I think I made the argument that Madonna was the last huge pop star (tho I believe I was a bit hesitant in saying that, as I think Michael Jackson was the last true massive star). Popular culture has fractured too much since then, in tastes and mediums.

George Michael was pretty big also.

Indeed he was. When I think of artists like Madonna, George Michael, maybe even Prince - I think of something like Michael's track "I Want Your Sex" and how it entered the cultural hive mind in a way that got all sorts of people debating it and what it meant. I'm not saying we don't see that stuff anymore, but it feels different. The discussion in 1987 felt more focused, maybe because it was being fed to us by professional media outlets versus social media. You'd see George Michael or Madonna on the cover of Newsweek and it would be a big deal.

That's just not true. I was withholding because we've had this exact debate many times, but Beyonce is as big, if not bigger, than certainly George Michael, but probably Madonna too.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I'd definitely agree about George Michael but not Madonna. I suppose it depends which era you grew up in but Beyonce could ask me a question in the supermarket and I wouldn't even recognise her.

Keep in mind you were a lot closer to the cultural zeitgeist in the 80s than you are now.
