George Michael was pretty big also.
Indeed he was. When I think of artists like Madonna, George Michael, maybe even Prince - I think of something like Michael's track "I Want Your Sex" and how it entered the cultural hive mind in a way that got all sorts of people debating it and what it meant. I'm not saying we don't see that stuff anymore, but it feels different. The discussion in 1987 felt more focused, maybe because it was being fed to us by professional media outlets versus social media. You'd see George Michael or Madonna on the cover of Newsweek and it would be a big deal.
That's just not true. I was withholding because we've had this exact debate many times, but Beyonce is as big, if not bigger, than certainly George Michael, but probably Madonna too.
I'd definitely agree about George Michael but not Madonna. I suppose it depends which era you grew up in but Beyonce could ask me a question in the supermarket and I wouldn't even recognise her.
Keep in mind you were a lot closer to the cultural zeitgeist in the 80s than you are now.
Which is why I said it depends which era you grew up in.

I definitely think Madonna is more iconic than Beyonce, which ever way you dice it.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

The Blow Monkeys still exist and put out new albums and everything. A serious huh from me.

They split up in 1990 and got back together in 2007.

Dr. Robert has released a fair few solo albums (10) in between those years and are more organic than the pop of the Blow Monkeys.

I occasionally learn that all sorts of various pist-grunge and nu metal bands are still around, touring and putting out new records. Static X most recently, iirc.

All awful music, makes the world a worse place to be in.

I honestly know only one song—"Diggin' Your Scene," which is probably all that most people know (at least in North America), if anything, by them—so I'm stunned that he/they are chugging along.

And, I assume, you have the same bafflement: who the fuck is buying tickets to see them? I accept a certain basic free market at work and wonder who is parting with their money to see/hear these crappy bands. Go play pinball, go get vaping equipment, don't waste your money on shitty bands.

Yeah, it's insane. And as you say, the economics don't make sense. Why would you buy these tickets and records when there's perfectly good meth available on almost any street corner in America? This is why the free market is bullshit.

Hello,

I had the album (vinyl, I think) of Animal Magic. Although it was overall decent, I still only recall Diggin' Your Scene.

The lead singer of Static X died awhile ago. No idea they were still around.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Continued on after a died as a "tribute" and released an album a coilke years ago and have a new one coming out this year. Really weird, imho!

Hello,

The video screams 80's but it's still a good track (more energy/soul than much of what I hear currently):

If they were still visiting this side of the pond, I'd buy a ticket.

Most people know that track and "It Doesn't Have to Be This Way,".

They had 5 albums before they split in 1990. They were very similar in feel to The Style Council in my opinion. A mix of pop and politics.
