Hey everyone,
Hoping I'll be able to reconnect with other Clash fanatics after too many years away. Meanwhile I've been fortunate to get a three-hour afternoon slot on the local college radio station every other Friday. The theme oughta resonate with everyone on here: the musical cross-fertilization between artists from Jamaica, the UK, and US. You can click on this link to see the playlists: https://davidshorr.com/connecting-flights-90fm
As I program the show, the easy part has been picking tunes from the first years of reggae in the late-1960s and then all the great roots music of the 1970s. Working on this has made me realize how much I love Scratch Perry's amazing body of work (I should've known). Also easy to play our faves from the late-1970s UK.
It's taken more effort coming up with more recent music / bands. Especially since I'm kinda picky. On the US side, the Interrupters went into heavy rotation right away (hard to imagine a Clash fan NOT loving the Interrupters). Also OAR. Then our daughter pointed me toward Wild Belle, and I started playing them. On the UK side, the Hempolics were love at first listen (psyched to have gotten a short promo from Grippa Laybourne). Also love Soom T, a few tracks from Mungo's Hi Fi. And then I can't believe it took me so long to find The Skints. But I did. The really hard one has been finding current / recent artists from Jamaica. Noodled around YouTube and a few Reddit threads, and Raging Fyah is all I've come up with. Like them a lot, but no one else so far. TBH, Ziggy's 2012 release Wild and Free seems to be the only album of his that I really like.
But who else haven't I found yet?

Same DavidS who made that hilarious lyrics video for Complete Control? Or am I imagining things here?
Anyway, welcome back! Sounds like a fun show.

Welcome back!!!
Agreed, your show sounds great. I'm sure you already know this label, but for American ska I always check out basically anything that Jump Up records puts out. Besides reissues, it seems like they're always turning up great new ska and reggae groups that would fit your show perfectly from the sounds of it.

Some really good new reggae artists out of JA include:
Samory I
Micah Shemaiah
Protoje
Chronixx
Hempress Sativa
Lila Ike
Kabaka Pyramid
Jah9
Jesse Royal
Chezidek
Sevana
Romain Virgo
Raging Fyah
Koffee
I could go on & on but this list should be a good start and lead you down some rabbit holes. If you need some inspiration for other artists old/new you can peep out my shows on Mixcloud, lots of deep cuts. https://www.mixcloud.com/SundayMorningMassacre/

Tried a few of those. Ragin Fyah is the only one that's grabbed me so far. Well, Protoje and Chronixx didn't quite do it for me. I think Chezidek was intriguing and worth another listen. And now you've highlighted all these others for me.sonnyburnit wrote: ↑17 Dec 2024, 4:15pmSome really good new reggae artists out of JA include:

I'll check it out. I'm so hopeless that Tim Armstrong's Hellcat is the only one I really know. First because Mescaleros. Second because Interrupters, whom I absolutely love.Flex wrote: ↑17 Dec 2024, 2:42pmWelcome back!!!

And hey, assume I'm not the only one on here who stans for the Hempolics, yes?

Right, so I wasn't completely off. Good to know I've still got a semi-reliable memory.DavidSReturns wrote: ↑30 Dec 2024, 1:12pmSort of. The one who made the (hopefully also funny) SEH missheard lyrics video in response to the hilarious CC video.
