Which probably would in hindsight not be as awesome as when I finally see him.
Joey Baron is the drummer of Masada right? Because he is pretty much the best drummer I know, and when I saw Zorn, he was phenomenal. He did do loads of weird stuff, but it all sounded good.
Yes.

Matey, being a slavish follower of mainstream taste, doesn't understand the place of extended techniques in avant-garde music.
Live in Sevilla is a great album, and I like all Masada I've heard, but I like Naked City and Spillane better.
Sevilla's good but Tonic 2001 is better. I prefer Masada to NC and the file card compositions.
What in your prior posts provides evidence to warrant you rolling your eyes?
I could try to get into a serious discussion but I won't since you are basically right.

Hey Matey, sorry if I offended, I was just giving you the business. Actually, it means quite a lot to me that you were willing to gamble your money and go see a show based on my recommendation, and I really appreciate it as a friend.

OK, sorry for the softie stuff, guys.

Nah, I feel like I read it less facetiously than it was intended. I was already set on buying the record you recommended. I was just touchy because I do like some more non-traditional stuff (occasional fusion, post-rock, less standard forms of jazz) and also that I do come from the drumming background so feel I am knowledgeable on that particular instrument in most settings. I didn't criticize the content of the horn solos because I am way unfamiliar with free jazz (and related) improv and theory.

Alright that was more long winded than was necessary. Back to commenting on Cut the Crap.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Sure, and I get the critique. Actually, I prefer vanilla Masada to their more avant-garde ventures. I don't care for the cartoon pieces (what probably read as "free jazz" to you).

I haven't read it yet, but there's an article on Zorn in this month's Harper's.

"Masada," he said, "isn't that a place in Israel?"
"Unnhngh," I replied.

Alright, I gave you call this afternoon because I went record shopping with my birthday gift card. Supposedly they had Tonic 2001 in stock but I could not find it after ten-fifteen minutes of searching. Are there any other recs that are equitable?

I went record shopping today since I had a nice gift certificate. Supposedly they had Tonic 01 in stock but after ten minutes of searching in the Zorn section, I could not find it. Any other suggestions?

Hey bud, new phone cos I don't live in Virginia anymore. I'd need to know what was available, but Sevilla is a good consolation prize.

From my memory:
Taipai, Middleheim, Rock, String Trio, First Live 93, Electric, maybe Sevilla.

I'd go for Sevilla first, String Trio second.

Listening to "Acharei Mot", 7:24 through 9:26 is basically one long "holy shit" moment.
