Speaking of shows

Post by Inder »

Went to a NXNE thing a few weeks ago to see Monotonix and These New Puritans. The former were absolutely wicked (in terms of showmanship, anyways -- leaping about, throwing garbage cans over the drummer's head, dis/reassembling the drum kit in mid-song, generally frightening the shit out of the congress of hipsters), and the latter even better. There was a bizarre mosh semi-pit for TNP, and people didn't know quite how to react to them. They stuck to album cuts, but it was still fun to see it all live. A good night, generally.

Hello,

I picked up the TNP cd in Denver a few weeks ago - "Elvis..." is great - very edgy stuff- very good, worth the money!

It's on iTunes, so I imagine it has a domestic release, as well. (Tho I don't know how iTunes works with European / American release dates.)

I'm probably just hitting stores at bad times then. Guess I'll have to order it.

I didn't mention one of the other notable bands at Sled Island in Calgary (where we saw Wire). I'd heard of Of Montreal but never actually heard them. Musically, they were decent—indie on the arty side of things. The bass player stood out for me. However, their performance incorporated a certain glam theatricality, with some dada-ish (perhaps) aspects. There was a guy in a tiger head wandering around, fighting with another in a black body stocking and silver mask. A guy reading a newspaper before being punched to the ground. Some small cannons that fired glitter. Big balloons filled with glitter being popped. The wife and I concluded that we're just too bourgeois and/or old to appreciate this extra stuff.
