Re: Fugazi
First pronunciation.
I would start with 13 Songs and move chronologically. But even the worst Fugazi album is pretty damn good, so they're all decent starting places.

What the scary clown said. Chronologically is probably the best way to absorb them.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead
Pex Lives!

Re: Fugazi
For the record, the worst (while still pretty damn good) is End Hits. It's only bad when graded on the Fugazi Curve.

Re: Fugazi
I had a friend whose first Fugazi album was End Hits and they were like... "what's the big deal?" and didn't follow up on any other Fugazi for awhile. Then I played Waiting Room for them and they were like "oh, I see now."Wolter wrote:For the record, the worst (while still pretty damn good) is End Hits. If "Waiting Room" doesn't hook you into the world of Fugazi (TM), you might as well give up on them.

I love Waiting Room and then bought 13 Songs and never really got into it.Wolter wrote:That is exactly why I said start with 13 Songs.Flex wrote:I had a friend whose first Fugazi album was End Hits and they were like... Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Re: Fugazi
For the record, my personal favorite is In On the Killtaker. It has a harsh nastiness to it that I adore. But objectively, I couldn't say which one is "best."

End Hits was my first Fugazi.
Steady Diet is their worst I think.
It's still better than anything Radiohead has ever done.

I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

I like Steady Diet better than End Hits. But that's like saying I like one style of pizza better than another. It's still good.eumaas wrote:End Hits was my first Fugazi.

I agree on the general quality idea. I started with Repeater + 5, and it's still my favourite, but it's all good, even the instrumental one.Wolter wrote:I like Steady Diet better than End Hits. Re: Fugazi
Although I can't say I've ever considered them my favorite band, they are probably the single most reliable band in history. Every album is pretty much great, and (other than maybe Repeater) in some way a departure in sound from the previous while still sounding like Fugazi. A neat trick if you can manage it.threecoffins wrote:I agree on the general quality idea. Absolutely. I think being so consistent precludes ever being the best, but a worthy niche to occupy nevertheless.Wolter wrote:Although I can't say I've ever considered them my favorite band, they are probably the single most reliable band in history. Re: Fugazi
I saw them in 1989 when I was 15. It sounds kind of corny, but that was a life changing show. I had been listening to the Cure a lot and if not for that show I my have become a pussy.
I think Repeater is their best.
